Modi overshadowed Nawaz Sharif at UN: Pakistani daily

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech at the UN was everything his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif's was not, said a Pakistani daily on Monday.

An editorial "Modi at the UN" in the Daily Times said: "Modi continued his charm offensive in the west with a speech to the UN general assembly that was everything Nawaz Sharif's was not."

Modi began with a quaint reference to India's ancient Vedic culture, a running theme in his speech.

He took the opportunity following this to rebut Nawaz Sharif's speech from the day before.

"He (Modi) was correct of course; the general assembly is no longer a platform for serious discussion, it is a way for heads of state to build an image for their country and themselves," said the editorial.

It noted that Modi's speech, with its references to Indian spiritual traditions was "written for the US public to consume, while Sharif's bland, narrow focus was everything that western publics feel is wrong with Pakistan - an obsession with India, desire for territory and a total lack of charisma and likeability".

It went on to say that Modi's speech did not focus on Pakistan except by implication.

"Also not lost were his references to India's large population, a way to position India as a major global market ... Climate change and poverty eradication, alongside terrorism, made up Modi's three main talking points."

The daily said that it is a credit to Modi's political acumen that he understands how important western public opinion is to shaping policy.

Why are you Indians so proud that a bunch of Indians met and held a convention for modi. You Indians are so insecure. Such a big deal over nothing.

The editorial is about PM Modi's speech in UN, not about Madison square...

Ya I agree ..We are overambitious but satisfy ourselves with little things ..continued focus on long term goals is missing somewhere ..

Well that is not saying much Nawaz is well known for ineptness.

I’m talking about the whole thing and how you Indians are over blowing something as insignificant as this, and acting like this is some kind of great victory for India. Case in point the dozens of threads about this subject and the hundreds of posts. I think you Indians have made more threads over this then the Mars satellite something you Indians should actually be proud of.

.
Not worth a thread if you ask me.... But then when if one can compare the attendance of Modi's speech in UN, then why not... But that might makes us look stupid

Seriously? Insignificant!!!!!!

A person representing 1.25 crores + humans on a world platform. Is it really insignificant? Dude it is something worth enjoying. Moreover the fun is he was banned by the same country whom he has given a tight slap by allowing visa on arrival. He has shown his magnanimity. He has shown to US that he does not care about his personal insult, he cares for India only and at this time, VoA is one of the small step to increase revenue.

This is what the democracy is all about. If you are popular among masses and do something for them, they you are apple to their eyes, but if you don't deliver, the very same mass will turn against your.

This is his honeymoon period going on, let him enjoy and hope his walk the talks too. Till now, in small steps atleast he is doing the right stuff to gain more popularity and opening means of revenue.

He is meeting CEOs of top 14 largest US companies and trying to understand what are the challenges they foresee or experience while opening a manufacturing unit in India and what they want him to do to make this process easy. This is a right step in right direction and believe me he is the leader who can lead not only India but whole South Asia to meet its lost glory.
