Modern India: A personal experience of a Sri Lankan

best cities ( culture, hospitility, friendly people) : north > lucknow, amritsar

south : bangalore
east: kolkata
west ; still mumbai

.
i was specifically referring to rude behaviour of people in Delhi but at the same time People in Delhi have their own charm, attitude and outsiders try to be one of them by adopting their accent/clothing etc...

Dont know whether they are best, but surely they are not bad for outsiders. I have fond memory of my visit to these cities.

Hmmm.....Chennai people certainly seem meticulous when giving directions.they don't skip any detail or landmark.

Dont know about chennai, never been there. When I went hyderabad first time, nobody helped me in finding an address. Sometime I have found building on my own, when others just standing nearby nodded their head. Must be language thing. I tried to ask in different accents, it does not work either.

My best bet were the muslims who could at least understand what I say. But then I did not want to ask a dodgy looking lafanga youth muslim, he may misguide me.
Try a mature looking man, or a lady wearing burqa, but without face veil, you have better chance of reaching where you want. If burqa clad woman has a male companion, ask him.

Google map is a blessing for me.

I remember one experience in Bangalore with a traffic cop. He insinuated that I shouldn't have come to Bangalore If I didn't know Kannada. Bangalore is a special case in south. It is still south but flooded with too many "northerners". If you listen to FM Bangalore, you will hear English and "Hindi"(!!) and almost no Kannada. We surely have made things worse for locals. Few times I tried using couple of Kannada words on a bus and I got the reply in English. Everytime! Ahhh the memories...Chennai was so not Bangalore. Didn't stay long but atleast auto rickshaw wallahs have no problem with Hindi speaking as long as they are paying:)

I went to hyderabad, people were also extremely polite, humble, and helping in nature.. most good thing I discovered that I can speak hindi freely and is able to get answer in hindi only unlike what I thought earlier.... the fact is people are better in hindi than in english

also we got special attention (or it just i felt it).... if auto drivers are removed from the city, i think I would become Ideal city for tourism

Which part of hyderabad you are talking about. Most telugus dont understand hindi. Nobody is against outsiders though, they are friendly.

the region around scundrabad, famous biryani center paradise, the nehru zoo, punjagutta, areas around namapally rly station, hussain sagar, areas of charminar

its my personal experience, the young generation around 18-22, are as fluent in hindi as in UP

My experience in US: Most south Indians (except Tamils) understand Hindi. Never had problem with even one. They may not be able to speak it very well or anything at all but they understand it.In case of Tamils, things are a bit sketchy. Most either don't understand(speak) Hindi or just pretend like they have no clue what the hell you are saying. Ofcourse this is true for current generation or atleast those migrating to US. Not sure how it plays in India.
