NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has put in place a policy that raised the participation of Indian firms in manufacturing ‘technical textile’ for the armed forces. Technical textile is used for specialised products like bullet-proof jackets, bullet-proof patka and high altitude clothing.

According to a senior Army officer, the policy was given the nod at a meeting in Mumbai under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and was attended by the Army. Details are being worked out for other areas as well.

The products under the current policy implementations include high altitude inner clothing, three-layered gloves, multi-purpose boots, snow boots, crampons and sleeping bags and other such products made of technical textile.

“The tenders related to the products up to the value of Rs 50 lakh will go to an Indian company giving the lowest bid,” the officer said. Foreign manufacturers will be able to participate in cases where the value of tenders is worth more than Rs 50 lakh.

But, in such cases also, even if a foreign company is found to be the lowest bidder, the endeavour will be to procure 50 per cent of the product by value from an Indian manufacturer.

But, the norm, in this case, will be that the indigenous company will have to supply the products at the same rate of the winning bidder. If the condition arises where the product is to be procured from only one participant, then the Indian firm gets preference. This policy is to encourage ‘Make in India’ with a view to enhancing income and employment.

Its good as long as there is no compromise on quality. We have seen in the past that larger scale corruption and kick backs have badly dented development of defense industry in India.

As long as GoI stops favoring those incompetent PSUs and is transparent in the tender process with complete inclusion of private Indian firms, we can expect a significant improvement in the quality. Sadly, corruption is rampant in all South Asian countries but hopefully it's getting better

In the past the shoes made in India was exported to Israel and then re-exported back to India for the Indian army with a price increase of 1000%.

Facts are sometimes stranger than fiction.

What's about Pakistan. Does Pak manufactur military related clothings and shoes or import these items?

India needs new camo and have vendors produce single piece for the specific unit. It's strange seeing Indian troops wearing multiple camos on one individual and many different types in a unit. They're ordering all sorts of camo still.

I doubt you import it. This regard Pak is way ahead of India. Though, this is rather simple fix.

Camo is usually based on the terrain but the green woodland camo is predominantly seen on most units in IA. We can't use the same camo for LoC, Punjab's fields, Rajasthan's deserts, Gujarat's plains and the Indo-Tibetan regions which have a widely varying terrain

I understand, but in those terrains as you mentioned, you'd see mishmash of different camos put on one soldier.

With that being said, even the green woodland suited for spring, summer Kashmir isnt suited for Thar, etc. Which is being used.

I wonder if units give out new uniforms when soldiers are transferred in between units or different regions. Probably they're asking em to use the same uniform for a soldier transferred from LoC to Thar because funds allocated for such purposes may end up in corruption of top brass

What ? U mean previously all those military clothing was imported? I bet it's from China. Hahahahah

No, most of em were from PSUs which proved to be sub-standard and the spec ops teams use imported equipment. With private firms like Tonbo and MKU making their mark, MoD wants to include more private Indian firms for better quality and also provide opportunities for exports
