More than 140 million people, out of Bangladesh’s population of 160 million, use mobile phones while around 80 million people access the internet, say the telecom regulators.

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission or BTRC released the latest figures on Tuesday.

The number of mobile subscribers was a little over 140.7 million by the end of September this year against 120 million during the same period last year, marking an 18 percent growth.

Grameenphone tops the chart boasting 63.8 million subscribers with the merged Airtel-Robi commanding 41.2 million subscribers.

Banglalink is a distant third with 32.3 million subscribers while state-owned operator Teletalk is struggling with 3.24 million subscribers.

The number of people with access to the internet has also grown by 18 percent in one year.

Nearly 73.8 million people access the World Wide Web by mobile phones, making up 93 percent of the total users.

Around 5.2 million subscribe to different Internet Service Providers and Public Switched Telephone Network to connect to the internet.

The number of WiMAX users has increased to 90,000 over the same period.

“The rise in the number of mobile phone and internet users indicate economic progress of the country,” said TIM Nurul Kabir, Secretary General of the Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh, on Tuesday.

Digital services in Bangladesh will flourish even more if the internet users are exempted from paying VAT, he suggested.

140 Million out of 160 Million, when 55 Million of the population is under the age of 15 is impossible. Either your country is under-reporting your population or you are counting multiple subscriptions by individuals as separate users.

The only other possibility is that every 10 year old and above in your country owns a mobile. With 43 percent of your population living under the poverty line, it does not seem possible that every household can afford to provide their 10 year olds with a cell phone.

Bangladesh claims 75% processing rate of its cattle population yearly and claims sustainable herd (world max hovers around 30%). So far the body count of BD ppl on this forum smashing into that particular wall is 3....the others steer clear as result of that:

Please tell me the phenomenally awesome animal husbandry rates and <12 month growth rates achieved only in Bangladesh compared to the world for a sustainable herd size in such an extremely densely populated + feedlot restricted area + low unit input to boot. Hopefully its scaleable/applicable to all other animal rearing/production/processing so we can increase world production by 6 - 7 times by simply following the awesome, revolutionary BD discovery.

When an actual reputable group of people standardise and collate the data (who are not flagged as "limited capacity to produce many of these statistics in accordance with relevant international standards and good practices"), there are massive reduction in BD numbers, but credibility increases at least:

Hope you don't mind me copy and pasting your post into the BBS quality collection thread.

Hahaha brother I swear to God, while writing that comment I was thinking about your point about credibility of BD government statistics. While I have nothing against BD people and usually support them on the forum against Indians but after following your posts I do agree that sometimes BD government statistics are not that reliable, but as Mark Twain said there are lies, damned lies and statistics.

Not at all.

Undoubtedly they are reporting numbers of subscription of sim. Hardly an issue. The main point to take away is that mobile and internet subscription is rising.

You simply need to look at the profit and capital investment in the area in the country. The old adage was that every £1 invested in telecommunications and internet returned £3 of returns with multiplier effect. This is probably much higher now.

I would concentrate on trend rather that pure statistics.

In GB the no of mobile subscription in 2016 was 92million .... the population of GB in 2016 is about 66 million. I can attest that 10 year olds do not all own a mobile either.

Phones are dirt cheap, anybody can get'em. As a matter of fact its not unusual for someone to have multiple phones. One to call the wife, one to call the girlfriend/mistress and what not !!
