mate could you explain?!! Firs pics seem to be just renderings and demos (not appear to be Indian) and second lot seem to ne different veichle and definitely not Indian military.

.
^^^
The first pic is pajero but its civilian version, the cartoon is i think imagination. The 3rd and 4th pic according to google pajero's LSV version operational in japanese army. But since there are not enough lsv pics of pajero i cannot tell u how exactly it looks.

Pic of Indian army using Pajero is not available except the news that IA has started using Pajero in Sikkim.

---------- Post added at 05:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:47 AM ----------

I still don't get why IA went out of its way to purchase a japanese vehicle, they could have gone for mahindra or tata lsv or shri lakshmi defence solution viper.

.
So what is it used for and by whom? SF? and why only for Sikkim and not rest of IA?

+ any links/sources?

I read some where last year that army is buying these SUV to keep face/ showoff to Chinese counterparts. Will probably be use for officer transports to flag meetings etc.
This was a request by army officers to replace Maruti Gipsy with some nice vehicle comparable to the vehicle used by Chine officers

I'll post link if I can find it

MITSUBISHI PAJERO SUV MAKES IT DEBUT AS AN INDIAN ARMY VEHICLE IN SIKKIM!

Mitsubishi-Pajero-SUV-1.jpg

In an unpublicized move typical of the low profile that the Indian Army keeps, the Mitsubishi Pajero SUV has been inducted into the Indian Army as a support vehicle for operations in Sikkim, which incidentally happens to be one of the border states of India, bordering neighbor China.
For long, the Indian Army had been using the cheaper Maruti Gypsy and the Mahindra MM540/550 as the operations vehicle of choice and this shift to the Pajero has raised some eyebrows as the Pajero is a much more costlier vehicles, easily costing thrice as much as a Mahindra MM540/550 Jeep or the Maruti Gypsy.
Not that the Indian Army which operates in very hostile conditions both in terms of weather and threat levels doesn’t deserve that, in fact the much more comfortable Pajero might be a very good addition to the Indian Army whose officers and soldiers have a very tough life, especially in the frontier states of India.
Also, the Indian frontier state of Sikkim does not have the best infrastructure in place even as it faces the hostile neighbor China. The Indian government, for long have neglected this vital area and this was grossly exposed during the recent Sikkim earthquake which claimed many lives.

Perhaps, the Mitsubishi Pajero being roped in for Army duty is one of the first step towards improving the overall infrastructural situation in Sikkim. The Indian Army definitely requires more such capable and rugged vehicles for duty in the frontier areas as the Mahindras and Gypsys of this world though rugged are quite outdated when compared to the Pajero.

Coming to the SUV in itself, the Mitsubishi Pajero is a Japanese SUV which is built by Mitsubishi motors and distributed in India by Hindustan Motors. The SUV uses the age old but tough body on ladder frame for its construction and runs on a diesel engine. The common rail turbo diesel engine of the Pajero produces 108 Bhp of peak power and 280 Nm of peak torque.
A five speed transmission transmits all this power and torque to the Pajero’s wheels through a four wheel drive system. The highly acclaimed SUV is known for its tough build and bomb proof reliability, so much so that the Pajero has been the multiple time winner of one of the toughest rallies in the world, the Dakar rally.
To this date, the Pajero holds the distinction of having the maximum number of wins in the Dakar Rally. All said, although the Mitsubishi Pajero SUV might be more than a decade old, it still might be the best option for the Indian Army due to its rugged but simple mechanicals, which have been well proven both on and off the road.

Indian army well deserves it we want best men to lead our forces and when MNC executives drives SUVs but we stuck with maruty gypsy its turn off for many talented people who want to join army.

Yeah, i know army guys don't go for comfort instead of love for the nation but we should offer them best we can. :)

And this Mitsubishi Pajero SUV thing is due to chinese when they inducted SUVs and flaunt them, it was having negative effects on our forces morale so army inducted SUVs to supplement that we are no less then anybody.

The Indian Army brigade facing the Chinese in north Sikkim has an unusual vehicle in its inventory: Mitsubishi Pajeros! The vehicles were specially procured after observing similar vehicles used by Chinese military personnel on their side of the border.

The fact is northern Sikkim is no picnic. Over a distance of 60-70 km, the height rises from 15,000 feet to 19,000 feet. (The Chinese have it comparatively easier, they reach the same heights but rising gradually over 140 km). It puts considerable strain on army personnel not to mention vehicles and equipment. And given the poor state of roads there, the wear and tear is steep. Therefore the rugged Pajero.

It didn't come easily. Apart from the army's stringent procurement procedures, the mandarins in the Finance Ministry were reported to have had many objections. Nevertheless the proposal went through for an undisclosed number of Pajeros and they are doing yeoman service.

Oddly enough, the army appears less tense about the Chinese threat in Sikkim. The answer lies in the fact that units are sitting on the ridgelines and are able to spot any movement on the Chinese side.

Then again the Chinese practice of stationing units 20 km from the border provides insurance against any surprise attack.

Satellite cover is another insurance. The army also deploys artillery and tanks in depth to ensure adequate backup to the infantry. This is crucial given the problems involved in any air supply effort.

There are no airfields in Sikkim, not because they're not required but engineers are yet to figure out how to get around the mountain ranges and lay a proper airfield. There are helipads but the logistics involved in moving tonnes of supplies or personnel at those heights tells heavily on equipment.

Border incidents appear to happen on a fairly regular basis, sometimes as often as every week. But these are rarely the "pushing shoving kind", or anything that degenerates into an armed confrontation. Army sources say that in the last 40 years no shot has been fired by either side. But the famous Finger Area is a bone of contention. The Chinese claiming the Indian border runs further south from its current position.

They are known to destroy stone cairns put up by the army to show where the Indian border begins. But many of these face offs are reportedly polite affairs, the Chinese anxious to make their point of view heard. Officers who have served in the area also say the Chinese tend to be very protocol conscious, the presence of a senior Indian army officer the occasion for an elaborate exchange of courtesies.

But there's no doubt the PLA is, as Defence Minister A K Antony puts it, "aggressively strengthening its capacities". So too is the Indian Army although comparatively our effort is slower, perhaps less focussed and always constrained by infrastructure and other hurdles.

Why Pajeros? Seems you people also dont have a gun rack behind the handbrake, it is always present in Pakistan. Maybe for senior officers or ADM duty only?

I dont get it with Pakistan as well, we get land rovers instead of toyotas. what other vehicles IA has for this role?
