Mitsubishi Motors may assemble Sedan cars in country

FE Report

Japanese car maker Mitsubishi Motors will assemble Sedan brand car in Bangladesh as it has signed a deal with state-owned motor maker Pragati, said the president of the Japanese car maker Wednesday.

Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko said in Dhaka that they would conduct a feasibility study on their plan and then they would go for assembling cars in the country if there was a positive result of the study.

"We have signed a memorandum of understanding today (Wednesday) with Bangladesh's car assembler Pragati. First, we will do the study to see the viability of car assembling here," said Mr. Masuko after completing his two-day visit to Dhaka.

The Mitsubishi Motors president said during his visit he has observed that Bangladesh is an emerging car market as its economy has been growing well.

"First we want to transfer our technology here. Then we will plan to go for further investment if the present tax and other facilities are favourable for investment," he said.

The government should restructure its tax on automobile parts so that the global car producers can invest here for manufacturing motors, he said.

Mr. Masuko said: "After technology transfer we have set up plant in Thailand. If Bangladesh can create opportunities we will also consider making investment here."

The sate-owned Pragati Industries Ltd. has already started assembling another Mitsubishi brand car "Pajero sports" with the help of Mitsubishi Motors for marketing it in Bangladesh. The car is expected to hit the market in April.

At present, a local company, Rangs Limited, is marketing different Mitsubishi brand cars in Bangladesh.
