At one time the Mitsubishi Pajero and Montero were considered to be the most aspirational vehicles in their class in India, now its the Toyota Fortuner and next move up; the Toyota Land cruiser Prado.

It is known as the 'working professional's car' in Japan. I myself own a 2003 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport back in Japan; still is in my parent's home. She's 12 years old, has over 200,000 km in her already, but she works like new. I still have the same shocks on her, LOL. You're right that the Toyota Fortuner and the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado are great models as well. There are also the Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Forrester, Maxda CX-9, Isuzu MU-X.

In India; Toyota has got a great reputation for quality, mechanical reliability and longevity or re-sale value; followed by Honda. While Suzuki is seen at the lower end of the market. Subaru Forester was introduced as the Chevrolet Forester in India but had a limited sale and life inspite of being a good car. That was because of its price and India is very price-sensitive or to be precise; is controlled by value-perception.
