This thread is dedicated to technical aspects of the Mitsubishi ATD-X, its performance comparison against other aircrafts and its roles.

Please bring up no territorial claims or any off-topic discussion.

I believe the current ATD-X prototype is nothing close to a fifth generation fighter. It seems like it might be a little stealthier than F-18 from the front and similar to F-18 from the back. Although the censored part might prove to be game changer if they have a sophisticated set up which reduces the intakes's radar footprint. The fancy sounding electronic features also may prove to be what makes this aircraft combat worthy but they are unproven concept which sound impossible to achieve at least for now. The maneuverability and agility of ATD-X currently remains questioned both by airframes shape and Japan's lack of experience in making engines.
The current prototype is based on 23-DMU which is apparently inferior to 24-DMU. With the arrival of the 24-DMU The stealthiness and maneuverability of the airframe will fixed to some extent. The overall shape of the 24-DMU looks promising but it still needs drastic refinement to match the stealth level of F-35's.
There is also speculated that 25-DMU also exists but there is no information about that as of now.

I don't have any knowledge regarding aerodynamics or stealth design and these are what I gathered by exploring the forums.
So what do you think about ATD-X and Japan's fighter project as a whole.

But that thread is so dated and relies on information available in 2012. Now that a lot more information is available, new updated analysis.

There is considerable information there for your peripheral consumption. Background information, especially has been discussed there thoroughly.

Nice thread and it is useful for providing information about technology.
