Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is not the first Pakistani Oscar Winner!

But till date this guy has grabbed 3 Oscars. Here is the list and details.

MIR ZAFAR ALI – THE FIRST OSCAR WINNER OF PAKISTAN

NOVEMBER 22, 2015/ JAWAD TARIQ/ LIFE: Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is a household name now. Most of us acknowledge her as the first Oscar Award winner from Pakistan, who secured an academy for the best documentary on the short subject “Saving Face” at the 84th Annual Academy Awards in 2012. But to the majority’s surprise, the first Pakistani Oscar winner is not Sharmeen.

Mir Zafar Ali, a visual effects specialist, won the first Oscar back in 2007, as a co-director on the team that won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for “The Golden Compass”. Media did not acknowledge his accomplishment widely and hence unfortunately, most people are unaware of his accomplishments. His achievements, however, did see the light of day through some newspapers and blogs.

Mir Zafar Ali has earned two Oscars owing to his incredible work. His second Academic Award came in 2013 for the movie “Life of Pie”, for his amazing contribution, yet again for visual effects creation. Next year, in 2014, Mir won his third and second-consecutive Oscar for the movie “Frozen”, which surpassed great animated movies like “Toy Story 3” and “Lion King” at the box office to become one of the highest grossing animated movies of all time. Moreover, “Frozen” also topped “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Star Wars” movie series to become one of biggest films ever made. However, these great success stories are either under-reported by internet and television media, or are not attributed to the efforts of the entire team involved.

Mir Zafar Ali was born and raised in Karachi. Pakistan. He graduated from Beaconhouse School System and FAST University in Karachi. At college, he did not find software engineering fascinating and realized he should do something different. He worked with some local companies in computer graphics field. Eventually, he went to USA to specialize in visual effects at Savannah College of Art and Design, Georgia in 2000. After graduating in 2003, he started working with Digital Domain, a Los Angeles movie company best known for visual effects contribution in movies like “Titanic” and “Fight Club”. Mir’s first movie was “The Day After Tomorrow” (2004) in which he worked on wrapping colossal waves around buildings.

His specialization is to recreate natural phenomenon like water, destruction and fire and visually create fantasy. Other renowned movies for which he worked include The Cabin in the Woods (2011), X-Men: First Class (2011), Aliens in the Attic (2009), The Mummy (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Surf’s Up (2007), Spider-Man 3 (2007), Ghost Rider (2007), Open Season (2006) and Monster House (2006).

To conclude, I would say that just like other Pakistani heroes, Mir Zafar’s achievement should also be duly acknowledged and respected. He is a home-grown talent who has hit global and he deserves much appreciation from the public’s end. Mir has not only made every Pakistani proud, but also provided courage to potential young Pakistanis to dream bigger and work harder.
