Veterans who parachuted into battle on D-Day have met paratroopers preparing for a commemorative jump on to the same fields 70 years later.

D-Day veterans from 9th (Eastern and Home Counties) Parachute Battalion (9 PARA) visited ColchesterÕs Merville Barracks to meet their modern counterparts from 16 Air Assault Brigade.

The veterans climbed back aboard the camps Dakota - the aircraft used for Second World War parachute operations and watched troops prepare for a jump to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Several hundred troops from the brigade will travel to Normandy for commemorative events next week, including memorial services at key locations such as Pegasus Bridge and a jump by 300 British, Canadian, American and French troops onto a drop zone used on D-Day.In the early hours of 6 June 1944, some 7,900 troops from the British 6th Airborne Division landed by parachute and glider to begin the liberation of Europe. 9 PARAs objective was to put out of action the German gun battery at Merville, which had a commanding field of fire over the invasion beaches.

Troops were widely scattered during the drop and only 150 of the battalions 600 men were available for the assault. Nevertheless the attack was launched and, after heavy fighting, the guns were silenced. Only 65 men gathered at the rallying point to move on to the unit's next objective. The Parachute Regiment was awarded a battle honour for the action, from which Merville Barracks takes its name.

Mines have always posed a problem. They can be planted on roads to catch people out or they are planted in organised minefields, suitably marked, to channel attackers in other directions.

Thus, if you can break through an organised minefield chances are you will hit the enemy in a vital spot. Many different systems were tried; rollers, ploughs, even explosives but flails certainly proved the most reliable.

Early flail tanks were used at El Alamein and on the advance into Tunisia but the type developed by the bus builders AEC, in Britain, was the best. It involves a conventional Sherman tank with an extra gearbox, driving off the main engine, which turns the drum at the front, thrashing the ground with chains. Equipment on the ends of the drum can also cut through barbed wire (as above).

The process is not perfect by any means; mines will be missed and the equipment is easily damaged and soon worn out, but they will reduce risk to an acceptable level so long as their limitations are understood. It goes without saying that it requires an inordinate amount of courage to operate these things.

From D-Day onwards flails were operated by 30th Armoured Brigade in the famous 79th Armoured Division. Our exhibit carries the markings of a Sherman Crab of the Westminster Dragoons. They landed in King Sector on Gold Beach on D-Day and were still operating, as a flail regiment, when the war in Europe came to an end.

Of all the jets that are currently in active service, these planes probably has the most ironic service history . They now serve the very airforce that they once tried to destroy for a span of four years.

Ex-IqAF Mirage F-1EQ in IRIAF service. No less then two squadron of these jets were confiscated by Iran during the gulf war.

AL-Asad airfield Iraqi MiG-25PU captured by Australian Special Air Service in 16 April 2003.

ustralian Special Air Service Regiment troops captured the Al Asad Airfield on 16 April 2003. Counter-SF tactics saw the enemy concentrate sports utility vehicles (SUVs) mounted with heavy calibre machine-guns with mortar support to try and out manoeuvre and overwhelm the SF groups. They failed abysmally as SF, sometimes with close-air support, used superior tactics to devastate and defeat this determined enemy element. The key, it was found, lay in destroying the SUVs. With that done, surrender inevitably followed.

The coalition found scores of fighter aircraft, mostly Soviet-era MiGs but also three advanced MiG-25 Foxbats. Special operations forces entered al Asad airfield and found numerous fixed-wing fighter warplanes, apparently undamaged and many still in flyable condition, hidden under camouflage. The discovery of over 50 aircraft at AL Asad Air Base and nearly 8 million kilograms (8,000 tonnes) of explosive ordnance was a major achievement. The MiGs escaped detection during the coalition bombing campaign. Some were buried, others were parked in date palm tree groves or tucked in dried out riverbeds and covered with camouflage sheets.

As already explained, Cope Taufan 14 is a biennial Large Employment Exercise taking place from Jun. 9 to 20 in Malaysia, to improve U.S. and Malaysian cooperation.

During the exercise, which also featured DACT (Dissimilar Air Combat Training) between U.S. F-15s from 104th Fighter Wing, from Barnes ANGB (Air National Guard Base), Massachusetts, and F-22 Raptor stealth fighters from the 154th Wing, Joint Base Peal Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, participating units arranged a quite unique mixed formation of U.S. Air Force and Royal Malaysian Air Force aircraft.

On Jun. 18, RMAF MIG-29N Fulcrum, a BAE Hawk, and an F/A-18 Hornet formated off the coast of Penang, Malaysia, with the U.S. Air Force F-15C Eagle and F-22 Raptor, for a photo-session.

Such large, dissimilar formations are usually arranged to celebrate the end of large multi-national exercises with at least one aircraft belonging to each of the participating units.
