Military action won't stop Iran nuclear programme, says USA

US secretary of defence Robert Gates said Tuesday that military action would not stop Iran's nuclear programme and would, instead, make it more "covert."

Gates told a conference that military action would offer only a "short-term solution" to the thorny issue of Iran's nuclear programme.

Western nations have accused Tehran of seeking to develop a nuclear weapon, something Iran vehemently denies.

It has refused global calls to rein in its suspect nuclear enrichment program and has been slapped with a series of UN and international sanctions.

A military action may not be worthwhile but a full fledged war will surely handle the problem well. In fact, a full scale war will also free US of Pakistan's blackmail over its supply lines to Afghanistan not to mention freeing Afghans from the stranglehold of Pakistan.

It will also enable US to install a more friendly govt. in Iran.

And post war US shall hire India as prime contractor to dig minerals out of Afghanistan and transport those to ports of fallen Iran.

Why only to Iran? Why not to India? After all, if we are to help the US, we'll also seek something in return.

Win-win for all except Pakistan. :coffee:

There will be no invasion of Iran.

No way. The U.S. public would go ape-s**t.

^^To be frank, US cannot afford another war. Fighting a war 4 continents away that too against unconventional warfare is no joke. It is the truth and US' biggest mistake was Iraq war. Though it was planned for some benefit of US, unfortunately things went wrong for them and instead ended up losing billions. This is where American government went wrong; despite knowing the presence of its past demon in shadows in this region, it went in all conventional style. And this is what put US where it is.

Though Afghanistan war had good reasons, Iraq war is where your economy started getting weak. Instead of US had focused all its energy in listening to other more experienced fighters in Afghanistan (2002's Russia-US-India summit which the then President Bush's delegation rejected), by now Taliban would have been history, you wouldn't have lost as much as today and region would have been peaceful

Nah. We have no bone to pick with Iran. In fact they are the only country in Islamic world that are strategically more friendly. About Khameinei's statement, he has all the right to say so for local consumption whatever he feels because even we have superficially done things that might look wrong towards Iran (the resolution, which isn't wrong entirely).

We are a neutral country and therefore no part to play in wars that have nothing to do with our country. Afghanistan indirectly affects the security climate in India which is why we get involved. IC 814's hi-jack was the beginning of it all and it simply exposed to our security apparatus what happens when Taliban rules Afghanistan. Never again.

Privately US officials will tell you, that it is inevitable that Iran will have the bomb, if they really want it. The Persians are pretty saavy, and they rightly calculate that though the US would probably win a tough hard conventional war, with high numbers of casualties, but the aftermath with Iranians united against an external aggressor, would probably make Iraq look like a children's picnic.

And with Iran's proxies in the world, it might draw in the Arab world, and then all bets are off, with pro-west regimes like Egypt facing the heat.

Israel will not go it alone!!

The history bears a testimony that some of the best military operations were done when everyone was least expecting them.

The American public opinion will change pretty quickly when the army find some nuclear weapons and prove their obvious potential dangers

According to your logic United States should invade North Korea today !

They simply cannot do it, since it would be a disaster. First because Iran will bomb all persic oil platforms. Price will augment dozens of times, with terrible consequences for the world economy. Second, even if they would be aniquilated, they will throw all that they have against Israel, since they would not care. And Third, The whole Middle East will go against Israel (Syria, Lebanon, Hezbollah) they would simply aniquilate Israel.

To vanish from the earth, USA needs to listen to your advice.
