TANK: Militants attacked a paramilitary base on Friday in the Mulazai area of the northwestern Tank district, killing a soldier and wounding two others, DawnNews reported.

According to security officials, militants attacked the Frontier Corps (FC) base in the early hours of the day. In addition to the casualties, the attackers abducted 15 other soldiers from the camp.

Security officials said a large contingent of paramilitary troops and armed forces reached the location and started a search operation.

Speaking to DawnNews, local commander of the outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Asmatullah Shaheen Bhitani verified that the 15 soldiers were being held captive.

Moreover, he claimed that a security forces vehicle as well as the soldiers’ weapons and a wireless set were also in their possession.

Pakistani Taliban attack fort, kidnap 15 soldiers

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Pakistani Taliban fighters attacked a paramilitary fort in northwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing one soldier and kidnapping 15 others, police said.

The brazen attack was followed by a statement to media in which the militants said they would kill the abducted troops.

Armed with assault rifles, at least 35 militants targeted the Frontier Corps fort in Tank district before dawn, said local police Chief Ejad Abid. The militants burned down buildings and captured a significant amount of weapons, he said.

One soldier was killed and two were wounded in the fighting, said Abid.

Another 15 are still missing and believed to have been kidnapped, he said.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to The Associated Press and said it was carried out to avenge the death of a local Taliban commander. He claimed 30 soldiers were kidnapped.

But another Taliban commander who said he carried out the attack, Asmatullah Shaheen, told the AP that he had 15 soldiers in his custody.

Some others managed to escape after the militants captured them, he said.

Abid, the police chief, said at least 22 soldiers were missing originally, but seven managed to return.

Shaheen said the militant commander being avenged, Taj Gul, was killed in a US drone strike in October in South Waziristan, an important sanctuary for the Pakistani Taliban next to Tank.

The militants attacked the Pakistani soldiers in response because of the country’s alliance with the US, he said.

Ehsan, the Taliban spokesman, said the militants have no intention of bargaining for the kidnapped soldiers’ release and intend to kill them.

”We are going to cut these soldiers into pieces one by one, and we will send these pieces to their commanders,” said Ehsan.

This is heinous ... I hope PA will recover them quickly

Frontier Corps Soldiers are being used as cannon fodder by the leadership.FC should be provided some advance weapons such as Mortar, Artillery from Army but you know it is strange that whenever our relations with US worsen these militants become active and start targeting security forces.

May God give them strength and courage to come out of this ordeal safe and sound..

ANP has failed in law and order .

that has nothing to do with ANP. its a security failure.
a machine gun post can alone mow down hundreds of advancing soldiers. I wonder what the guards on duty were doing.

I have spent time in Kahuta back in the early 80s and one night me and a unit officer went out for a walk where my father's unit was deployed. we were causally walking when suddenly 2 guards sprung in front of us with their G3s at the ready commanding us to halt, demanding our identity and the password. we had to comply with our hands in the air and only once they were satisfied we could resume our walk.

but here it looks like the sentries were overpowered first and the rest of the soldiers given a rude surprise.
too bad that they have not learnt yet on how to repulse such ambushes. its not the first time is it

Kill all those bastard militants for once and all. They are just enemy of humanity,be it INDIA or PAKISTAN it doesn't matter for them.

normally in such attacks they overwhelm their target with sheer numbers, safe guess is from 50 to 150. These guys are locals of that place and fighting a gorilla war is hardwired in them for generations. They might not be that many but give that impression to their target.

One of the usual tactics is that they will approach the posts as normal civilians and passer-by and then suddenly detonate their explosive jackets. With the front line destroyed and in disarray, their second wave will storm the base and kill as many as they can. If the post only has 10 or 15 people then there is a chance that they would either kill all or kidnap few too.

Finish those mother f%king terrorist %astards and get your boys back!

The terrorist groups operating in Pakistan are pawns in the game, America other enemies of Pakistan look at these groups with glee and will happily use them for their objective
There is a military aspect of dealing with these sub-human vermin but there is also an economic and social aspect
From military point of view their cadres have to be decimated with fire power
From an economic point of view the flow of funds be it through collections from sympathizers or overseas transactions have to traced and eliminated
And from social point of view all those associated with these rats have be shunned from daily life in Pakistan. Their businesses need to be shut, their banks account and properties checked and monitored. A simple phone call to some sh!t head who sympathizes with these vermin inquiring about details of their bank account and properties is enough to send the message that you are being watched and your a$$ will be ours if you support the enemy!!
These measures have been put in place and they have yielded good results and we have to continue to apply these in a sustained manner

As IB pointed out, a fortified installation (and the reports are suggesting this was a kind of 'fort'?) should have been able to repel this attack easily, unless it was mounted by a very large force with some major weaponry.

Chances are this might have been a simple lightly fortified 'check-post', and was overrun by a large surprise attack - does point to the need for having a lot more CAS available.

Incompetence and lax adherence to SOP's may also be at play, though the FC has improved a lot from a few years ago ..

A glimpse of what making 'peace' with terrorists would be like.

The real problem is that such incidents have adverse consequences for morale.

Damn care about kidnap my question is what the hell soldiers are doing when Militants comes near their check post/HQ!

The SOP in operational area, to my knowledge, is clear that unless any approaching individual or group of individuals can identify itself clearly it is to be engaged and taken down and as a result of this SOP there has been an incident in which the sentry shot at his own college since the colleague failed to identify from a distance when challenged
Since details on this incident are sketchy, hard to say what really led to this
