The first IRST was on F-101 Voodoo in the 1950s. F-4 in the 1960s also had IRST mounted under nose.

Nope. The front is kinda flat. Quite a bit of drag. Best retract it when not in use.

Russia lost 1 Su-25 to SAM, 1 Su-30 to crash, 1 Su-24 to crash, 1 Su-24 to F-16. Not really a big loss. Russia is a plane manufacturing country, self sufficient. 1 loss replaced by 10 new planes. What planes would you like Russians shoot down in Syria?
