Russia & CIS Defense Policy Blog Jet fighter supplies for India’s Admiral Gorshkov to be completed this year

Russia will supply to India Mi-29k fighters for the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov before the end of this year, Mikhail Pogosyan, general director of the companies Sukhoi and MiG, told a press conference at the Farnborough International Airshow 2010.

“The main supplies should be completed this year,” he said.

A total of 16 planes are to be supplied to India under the contract. Six of the planes have already been supplied.

The planes are being transferred to India in strict compliance with the timeframe envisioned by the contract, Pogosyan said.

It is good that Russia now understand the importance of time. For sometime things seems to move much faster. :)

lolz one aircraft carrier with no air craft and another air crafts with no aircraft carrier...is this funny or what?

"What the use of it without aircraft carrier"

@ gowthamraj
The situation is not so bad. The MiGs will operate from Goa in the meantime, first conventionally and later from the "ski-jump" set up at INS Hansa which replicates that on INS Vikramaditya. The aircraft will also be flown to the other bases. Please remember that when aircraft are operational on the carrier, there is always a designated alternate land base/s (in the vicinity) wherever the carrier is deployed. These aircraft are new to IN service, everybody down the line (incl. ground crews) will need to be familiarised. Most of all this is again going to be major shift for Naval Aviation from STOVL Harriers to more conventional MiG-29 jets. The time upto commissioning of "Vikramaditya" will be put to good use.

It would make a great cricket field for 20/20

But shoiab aktar's run up has to be shorten up he might fall off the carrier with his extended run

nice suggestion...
The length of our AC is more than 280 m.before fall off, shoiab aktar would exhausted..

ohh, silly me.......sorry for my ignorance.i have forgotten that you people have never seen a AC.:D

Pakistan navy doesn't need an aircraft carrier, nor can it afford one.

Defending an aircraft carrier is hard... One anti-ship missile could spell disaster.

so much for your aircraft carrier....

Just one SAM( Surface to Air missile) is required to down an aircraft, that does nt mean countries shouldnt buy or make them.

well, not exactly...true to some extent..but not a reason enough for not having an AC. :pop:

an aircraft carrier costs about $4 billion.

Imagine what you could buy with that....
destroyers, frigates, subs etc...
surely that's a safer option.

how many tanks can you buy for a price of 1 F 16. ? Probably 20.. but You wont .. Right?? Because both of them serve different purpose.. Same applies to the AC as well..
