All the MIG-27 fighter jets, which have not been upgraded, will be phased out in the next couple of years and there are plans to introduce Rafale and Tejas, Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha today said.

"Mig-27, specially the ones which have not been upgraded, are going to be retired from service. They have served well for the country. We have plans to retire them in the next 2-3 years time," he told reporters here.

Some of the squadrons of MIG-27 wil be affected.

"We are planning to induct many more aircraft. We have a roadmap," Raha said, adding there are plans to replace old aircraft with new ones like Rafale and Tejas.

On inducting women pilots for fighter aircraft, he said the plan was being implemented now.

"Our Airforce academy has many women pilots under training now. We are going to select some pilots from them who will fly fighter aircraft after completing training," Raha said.

So how many were not upgraded?
There are 5 operational SQNs of MiG-27s- 2 SQNs have upgraded MiG-27s (from DARE/HAL)- SQN 10 and 29. And the other three have not as far as I know - SQNs 18,22, 222.

Earlier TACDE had the MiG-27 but 4-5 years ago phased them out for work on the MKI to begin.

We should go for Su34 for 40 million each. Massive range massive capabilities

Do you how many of these Mig 27 are upgraded and how many are not ?
As the chief says their priority being phasing out only the non upgraded one's
About 60 non-upgraded, 40 upgraded.

Not going to happen, not worth it, not wanted- a waste of time even discussing it bro.

From what I remember, at least 80 of those are in service. (I'm not sure.)

Cool, my info is from 2010, I guess a 3 more SQNs have been upgraded since then.

The upgrades were limited to avionics though and the entire fleet (upgraded or not) is still plagued by the R 29 engine issues so need to be phased out as soon as possible.

Yes, and I think that explains why even two squadrons of upgraded ones have been withdrawn from service. (If my memory about 80 out of 120 being in service is right.)

There is the engine issue, and as a senior AF officer has written about, there are fundamental flaws in the design itself that makes it a risky machine to keep, especially when old in the tooth.
