Another Hatirjheel-INSPIRED project has been opened by the government today. The place is very close to the Airport Road, but falls under the cantonment area just opposite to the Army Stadium. The project comprises residential towers, Dhaka's first double-deck bridge, a café, a boating club, a restaurant and an amphitheater among other things.
(Hatirjheel is a waterfront area in midtown Dhaka which used to be a bathing station for elephants. It is planned to be a very large waterfront lined with mid-rises.)
Kohinoor Chemical (FMCG Consumer Toiletries and Consumables manufacturer) HQ renovation in Tejgaon, Dhaka (of 'Tibet Snow' fame). Kohinoor is a brand of Orion Group.
Hatirjheel (shown above) will soon be furnished with modern entertainment facilities like wi-fi, floating restaurants, water taxis, laser shows and an amphitheater. A police station will also be opened in the area to ensure public safety and security.
The whole area will be enclosed in an eight-foot long wall, and RAJUK said the construction work on the wall will commence from next month. A number of speed-bumps will be erected on the roads to slow vehicles and prevent accidents. The initiatives have been taken by the housing and public works ministry.
“This project is not an important project for RAJUK alone,” an engineer with the ministry, Mosharraf Hossain said. “All relevant ministries and departments need to cooperate with the initiative as this will prove to be a major tourist spot for locals as well as foreigners.”
Tenders will be sought this month to offer the advertisement rights to private companies as the area will also be kept hawker-free. The whole project will be implemented by the Bangladesh Army who is already in charge of the Hatirjheel-Bagunbari project area.
Dhaka City Corporation and Dhaka WASA (Water and Sewage Authority) will also provide necessary assistance.
Dean of BUET Architecture Department Prof. Dr. Mujibar Rahman told Ittefaq, “The main purpose of Hatirjheel was to store rain water and control flooding in nearby areas. For this reason there are 11 openings to the actual lake.
However, the water in the lake is being polluted with sewage. New drainage lines and culverts will be constructed in selected areas to divert the sewage line and keep the lake clean and beautiful.”
Property around the lakeshore drive area has been rapidly sold to midrise developers.
