Windows Updates aren't always a good thing. Sometimes, an unwanted automatic update can ruin your day...or livelihood. Just ask Teri Goldstein, the California travel agent whose computer allegedly kept crashing after an unwanted upgrade to Windows 10 -- right in the middle of her busiest season.

But Goldstein struck back. Last month, she won $10,000 from Microsoft for the business she says she lost, and the new computers she says she had to buy to replace her crippled PC.

Goldstein spoke to both Computerworld and The Seattle Times at length about the problems, which began back in August 2015. That's actually months before Microsoft's recent extra-sneaky push to trick Windows 7 and 8 users into upgrading to the new operating system, but Goldstein says she was fooled none the same.

"I had never heard of Windows 10," Goldstein told The Seattle Times. "Nobody ever asked me if I wanted to update."

Goldstein won her judgment in small-claims court, where $10,000 is the maximum she could claim. Microsoft appealed the decision at first but later thought better of the idea. "The company dropped its appeal to avoid the expense of further litigation," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement.

I actually rather like the Windows 10 operating system, and if you think your computer can handle it, you've got only one month left to get it for free. But there are plenty of reasons you might not want to upgrade, and unwanted automatic updates are one of them. In Windows 10, you'll need to jump through an awful lot of hoops to make those go away.

They did the same to me at an entirely inconvenient time. Ignoring how it makes life easier for them to have one standard OS suite, it was a bad PR move and a great way to anger users, yours truly included. Windows 10 was expectantly disappointing, full of bugs and needed a lot of tweaking, and even then it doesn't give the same performance as before.

Win 7 is the best imo and will always be.

What else one can expect from people that are old school.

Happened to me too..lost my couple of hours with that unwanted upgrade..& found that few external softwares are not as compatible as with Windows 7. Had to revert back to the previous version!

I'm a Mac and Linux guy but IMHO Win 10 is one of the best OS from MS, however there are still problems as few of applications/programs are not designed for it and thus do not benefit or even function properly on Win 10. Once people get converted to Win 10, there's no going back to WIn 7.

Windows 10 can run office 95, it is by far the most compatible version of windows ever.

Disasters like Win Vista, Win8 and now Win10 represent the quality of outsourcing MS is getting in India....Win7 is an exception as it was made by fine turning and code-consolidation of WinVista by many of the ex-employeed Microsoft initially fired but recalled them back under haste to run the parallel project of Win7 after they figured out Visa was not taking them anywhere...

Why do you want to use office 95?

i have a constant disc use of 100% and i cannot trace any app to it..i also have to restart the explorer.exe process to fresh up the computer when it bogs down too slow..and 64bit programs are problematic..

Well if you add some hardware info that may help in pointing out the fault. It might be you don't have enough memory (RAM) in your system. I have installed/upgraded to Win 10 on the following system and it is working great
