Domestic handset company Micromax will start assembling phones locally by the first quarter of next year.

"We have a plant in Rudrapur and have already started assembling of phones on trial basis there. It will be commercially launched in the first quarter of next year," said Micromax Co-founder Rahul Sharma.

The facility employs over 400 people. Currently, Micromax imports devices from China, where it has tie ups with manufacturers such as Foxconn.

The company, which plans to start exporting to Russia beginning next year, is aiming for a turnover of more than Rs 6,000 crore by the end of the current financial year.

"We closed last year at about Rs 3,168 crore and we are looking to double that this financial year. We are on track to be a billion dollar company by FY 14," Sharma added.

The company is betting big on its smartphone portfolio.

According to IDC, Micromax stayed at the No. 2 spot for Q2 of 2013 with shipments crossing 2 million units. Its share of the smartphone market increased to 22 per cent from 18.8 per cent in the last quarter.

Sharma said the company will also explore the European market.

"Russia is the first step. After Russia, we are moving on to Europe, the work is going on," he said.

The company plans to introduce over 20 devices in the next six months.

Well my friend.. Micromax is as Indian as Apple is American....

Brand is owned by Indian company... mobiles are designed by Indians... and its manufactured by Chinese....just like every other mobile company gets their mobiles manufactured in China ...so does Micromax.

The difference is that companies like Apple send over their designs and get products made to their specification.

Whereas Micromax simply imports standard China mobiles and brands then with the Mcromax label.

No dear, Micromax is just a brand name, they just import ready made chinese phones, label them with their tag, pack and sell them. There are almost 4 - 5 such companies in every country now, but its only shining india where people try hard to call them indigenous product.

A hint, just compare Micromax mobiles with Qmobile or Voice phones, you'll find 95% similarity in looks, design and functionality. Don't tell me your Indian designs that are manufactured in China are being exported to whole world..

Thats' why I said... read the article posted above.... they have exploited a solid platform to create mass brand..and now they are redefining the market.

Micromax started as a software company. They have their share of innovations too. Micromax was the cell phone company to introduc handsets with 30 days battery backup, it was the first to introduce dual-SIM dual standby handsets, and the first to introduce a handset that could switch between GSM and CDMA networks. Those innovations were all Indian.

that makes a lot sense now , considering its crappy build quality .

With Chinese technical supervision and assistance,Indians will now learn to start assembling their smartphones using Chinese parts and components, for India's mobile phone industry chain is as long as an average Indian's pinkie。:D

don't give too much importance for micromax or karbonn or any such companies. these are namesake Indian only  once our electronics industry gets a backbone in terms of manufacturing skills, we can vouch on made in India mobile phones. for now, may be Nokia or some other brands do have some phones made in India.

It's still much cheaper if we buy from china assemble in holland and sell in India. Chinese can provide electronics at almost 25% of cost. Why would you go for indian industry where u have lack of labour skill and so many hurdle from authorities. And Indians don't give a shyt to local product they just want cheaper shiny crapps. So feed the public same garbage and rack in mulla.

A little correction, Spice launched first dual SIM standby cellphone in India.
