During flight they receive updates from the plane. In the terminal phase, the IRST guidance system is switched on for active terminal guidance without updates from the plane. America don't have this kind of missiles.

IR guided air to air missile best at short ranges, at long ranges they lost precision @undertakerwwefan

. .
The missile is guided by the plane by data link. The terminal guidance system is not turned on until the last few seconds. The terminal guidance has no relevance on the missile's precision.
No IR guided AAMs can't be guided through data link because it lacked receiver , IR guided AAMs is inicially guided by IMU (inertial measurement unit) then it will switch IR in Terminal stages @undertakerwwefan

US have AIM-9X & AIM-9X2, and later can engage ground targets too.

The AIM-9X Block II completed its first test firing in November 2008. Also known as AIM-9X-2, the missile is an upgraded variant with a lock-on-after-launch feature. The AIM-9X Block II is also equipped with a redesigned fuse and a unidirectional forward-quarter data-link.

Sorry sir i accept my mistake but its a recent and most latest modernization of AIM-9X, but i am talking about all short ranged IR AAM including older one @Basel

AIM-9 is shorter ranged missile. Don't have R-27 ET's longer range.

Proof i already read lots of IR guided BVR they haven't any data link at all at mid flight phase as active radar guided BVR and IRS-T is short range AAM not BVR @undertakerwwefan :p:;):p:enjoy:

MICA IR has the same data link as radar guided MICA. R-27 ET has the same data link as radar guided R-27. The data link interfaces with the carrier plane's data link until the last few seconds when IRST is switched on for terminal guidance.
