The Secretariat of the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) has signed a contract with Damen Shipyards for three Ténochtitlan-class 42 m patrol vessels that are based on the Damen Stan Patrol 4207 design.
"Damen will provide the engineering, material package, technical assistance, and crew training," the Dutch shipbuilder said in a 6 January announcement.
The vessels are to be built by the navy-run Astilleros de Marina (ASTIMAR) No. 1 shipyard in Tampico, and would bring the Ténochtitlan-class fleet to 10 hulls.
For the last three or so years SEMAR has sought to modernise Mexico's patrol fleet for its coastal and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The Ténochtitlan class is replacing the navy's smaller Azteca-class patrol vessels - mostly commissioned in the mid and late 1970s - and SEMAR hopes to have 14 of the new ships by 2018.
