You are actually spot on my Russian Friend. I thought exactly the same thing when I saw this news. Merkel is merely trying to gain back pubic support and maintain her position. It's a common political trick politicians often use when elections are coming. I'm sure the German people won't fall for such a cheap trick. They are not illiteratesor a poor uneducated developing country. So Merkel shouldn't think this will save her if she should have lost. Lol

If a country thinks it's s not suitable in their land publicly for security or other reasons, then I don't see what's wrong there. Those who don't agree with the law there can leave. Period. Germany didn't beg them to come live there.lol

Same with Islamic countries having strict dressing code. Our girls and boys can't wear anything they want in these Islamic countries(else they face harsh punishment), I Don't see anything wrong with that either , any westerner who isn't happy about that can leave. it's their country and way of life and it should be respected as well.

Don't get me wrong. I think a burka is regressive and primitive personally. But I will respect and protect a woman and society's right to be regressive and primitive by choice. As long as the woman and the society she lives in are not hurting anyone or impinging on similar rights of theirs.

Although I am against the Burqa - not the garment itself but what it often conveys, the compromise of female rights because of the uncouth behaviour of males, I am some what concerned as to where this could lead us to.
