In terms of Indonesia, it is not a done deal yet. Japan is already a lost cause for China-- absent a major, radical change in Japan's domestic political structuring. Korea, I guess, just wants to be on the safer side. But they seem to be less responsive to US pressure than Japan.

But, yes, the US is still quite powerful and influential in the Asia-Pacific.

In regards to the relationship between Japan-US-ROK,

Japan has is beginning to develop measures , and policies that may not be to the interest, anti-thetical, to US interests. I would like to cite two particular areas : 1) the closing of Futenma Air Base in Okinawa (which was in large response to local demands, and thus nationally mandated, the US conceded), 2) growing development ties with Russia; Japan and Russia are in the cusp of discussing about a joint-development of an oil pipeline to be built from Sakhalin to Hokkaido, Japan and Russia are also to conduct another set of naval operations and joint drills in Vladivostok between the Japanese Navy (JMSDF) and the Russian Navy. (against American protestation).

We see a growing awakening of Japan. And I welcome this.

The underlying feature of any institution that China leads or dominated heavily is non-intervention.

Hence, many developing countries will eventually find it more to their interests to work with these institutions which will carry little political clout. Unlike the Western counterparts whose economic aid comes with a lot of strings attached, these alternative institutions will be more consensus-based.

Any country, including Vietnam, can be sure that there will be no interference in their internal affairs in exchange for development aid--an experience that will defy the orthodox Western model.

If these conditions are not met, rest assured, Chinese model will also fail in the long run. Personally, it is the last thing I would like to see is China attaching certain political concessions related to the recipient economies' internal affairs in exchange for aid and loan.
Vietnam and China has no political mutual trust now.
Emotionally speaking,we shouldn't take the monkey in.What can Viets do except borrowing money and abusing China endlessly?

Nope, korea is still very much under the U.S, they cant make any critical geo political decision without U.S consent/approval, though they might 'seem'to you to be less reponsive to the U.S against china than japan. But thats because korea hates japan more than anything in this world, hence they prefer china(the lesser evil for them.lol)). So this is not because the U.S has less influence over them than it does over Japan, its simply because their hate of japan overshadows even U.S orders.:disagree:

:) I understand the sentiment, but, in geopolitics, emotions are just dangerous. Has to be cold as rock in a Siberian steppe.

I guess it is more to the interest of China to make friends rather than enemies while strictly preserving its territorial sovereignty. These two can be done simultaneously, and, institutionalization is a perfect platform since it sort of socializes states into a certain way of behavior.

South Korea is not in because it feels that it has nothing to gain from becoming a founding member of the bank, aside from unnecessarily irking the US。

Indonesia will join in a year or two。

the new bank will be dominated by China, thus Japan is not interested. But I wonder why Korea and Indonesia don´t want to join.

Indonesia is a surprise.. But Korea is interdependent on US on foreign affairs than even Japan.. Japan has over the years have developed a more independent foreign policy

Hmmmmm.....i dont think going against the U.S will be good for japan.for the U.S has been japans protector for decades, enabling japan to focus on its economic development after the war,, unlike most countries like vietnam who had to do both at same time. So not every country had that priviledge. Thats without counting the favourable economic policies of the U.S towards japan etc,
Japan going against the U.S intetests will end up very badly for japan both diplomatically, economically and politically.

Can japan stand upp to china and russia alone? Nope. Japan needa he U.S more than it needs russia and china

Japan has begun to develop a more robust and independent foreign policy, despite our obligations to many alliance systems, given our economic and combined politico-military interdependency with United States/ NATO/ European Union. However, despite these entangling alliances, our development of rapprochement systems with say the Russian Federation, the People's Republic of China is tantamount to economic policy success.

I don't really think we have to worry about having a war with Russia or China. In fact, if you actually review / research policy initiatives in Japan over the years, you will see that there is a growing trend to establish greater developmental partnerships with Russia. The sole antagonist to this has been the United States.

Japan has to develop our relations with Russia to ensure our energy security. Japan also has to develop our relations with China because, quite frankly, China is a greater economic partner to Japan than the United States. And this gap increases ever year.

I'm not saying or approving of a radical step to cancel Japanese-American alliance system. I'm saying that Japan needs to implement a more utilitarian view and America has to understand Japan's economic realities in regards to China and Russia.

A milestone agreement for the structure of the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has been reached, with 21 Asian countries, including India, stepping forward as founding members.

An intergovernmental memorandum of understanding was signed on Friday morning, opening the way for the formal establishment of the China-proposed financial body that will be tasked with providing funds for regional infrastructure projects'

The 21 economies are: Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Vietnam.

During a Southeast Asia visit last October, Chinese President Xi Jinping put forward a proposal to establish the AIIB to promote connectivity and economic integration in Asia.

Since that timeChinahas held five rounds of talks with interested countries on setting up the AIIB and achieving its reported capital target of $100 billion. As of Friday,Japan,Australia, South Korean andIndonesiawill not take part in the AIIB.

China's Finance Minister Lou Jiwei said in a Wednesday conference that the AIIB is an open organization in terms of admitting members, with a guiding principle thatnations in the region comes first

Lou said the AIIB has a different focus than established multilateral organizations such as World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) but added that the leaders of these groups have welcomed the establishment of the AIIB and will hopefully cooperate in certain projects.

The ADB has estimated that in the next decade Asian countries will need $8 trillion in infrastructure investments to maintain the current economic growth rate.

Good news. Competition in loans provisions is always positive.

Yes we are happy to be there. But keep strong mark on Indian influence. If that happens, this bank is meant to fail.

it is interesting to see that even philippines and viets jumped on the board, while indonesia not as the only country in ASEAN.

considering China is the largest export market for indonesia, time to categorying it into US-japs camp and deal with it accordingly, let it suffering econimically from China at one end and being bullied stratigically from west-backed Aussie at another end.
