Meghalaya Govt Plans to Introduce Chinese in Schools

In a bid to give the students an edge to find employment in China, one of the fastest growing economies of the world, the Meghalaya government is contemplating on introducing Chinese language in its schools.

"Chinese is among the most influential languages. There are students travelling to China already for medical studies from the state. It would be ideal for students to learn Chinese," Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said today.

The subject would be introduced as an elective subject in the state-run schools, Sangma said.

"Learning Chinese language would give the students an upper hand in getting jobs in China. Indian professionals are in demand there," he said.

Seems like a good idea.

China is a happening place. I missed not being able to speak in the local lingo each time I have been there.

. . .
Even a central board (forget which one) is going to make Chinese available as a language to study.

Its logical, also this will lead to more understanding of the Chinese civilisation. We know very little about them.

Good move by Meghalaya govt. Hope other states will follow soon. CBSE i think already offers chinese or will soon do so. Kapil Sibal, Human resources minister in 2010 had said ""China is our powerful neighbour and emerging as a biggest consumer of global resources. We cannot wish it away. The best way to introduce China in India is to introduce its language at primary level so that our kids develop interest and knowledge about China."

It's already there in a lot of B-Schools. My room mate had Mandarin, but it was annoying hearing him practicing his "ma's".
