I think the cost of raising a cow is quite high anywhere in Bangladesh. It is because pastureland is not available in the country. So, the farmers have to buy the feed from the market. Even I have seen fodder grass being sold in the market.
This is how the meat prices go up and only a selected few can regularly consume it. However, although it may look like a paradox if a time comes when only the professional farmers raise the livestock the meat prices will look cheaper than now if the production rises and the earnings of common people grow in parallel.
Recently there was strike of the meat sellers who were telling a different story. They were saying while bringing a cow to Dhaka they needs to give bribe on every spot to police and local leaders and at Gabtoli they need to give big chunk of money to local leaders to let the cow in. They claimed if the bribing and extortion is stopped price will reduce to half. You raise a good point as well, increasing efficiency and providing the farmers the feed at a reasonable price will help to reduce the price more. The meat shop owners were saying due to high prices sells has reduced. Earlier they could sell 4-5 cow in a day but they are struggling to sell 1-2 cow. Many meat shop has been closed due to this reason.
