McCain proposes $430 billion defense boost over next 5 years

None of the countries you mentioned are too well armed for conventional warfare; not even Russia.

Pakistan and North Korea developed nuclear weapons as a safeguard against invasion from a conventionally stronger adversary. Iran wasn't so lucky because US and Israel actively sought to sabotage its nuclear weapons program.

However, Pakistan and North Korea do not stand a chance against the US in a war, even with nuclear weapons in the picture.

Then why are they going small tactical nukes, what purpose does it serve?

Bro,

I will elaborate these matters to you in time. I will tag you in a thread in which I will explain to you how different legs of US war-machine come together to ensure over-match over regional nuclear powers in current times. You will have to wait for some days for my analysis though.

Iraq and Afghanistan represent [low-intensity] and (unnecessarily) prolonged conflicts where political agenda reign supreme. Although there are instances of operational brilliance in these theaters, they are overshadowed by political agenda.

Afghanistan, in-particular, represent an ideal testing ground for different weapons and warfare doctrines: https://defence.pk/pdf/threads/air-...-up-taliban-fight.540686/page-2#post-10202058
