Sangan is estimated to hold 1.2 billion metric tons of iron ore.

Iran is advancing a massive steelmaking project being promoted as the country’s “South Pars” of the steel industry.

Sangan, the biggest industrial project in Iran’s east, will produce 17.5 million metric tons of iron ore concentrates and 15 million tons of pellets a year.

An initial investment of $2 billion is planned in Sangan which is estimated to hold 1.2 billion metric tons of iron ore.

Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mehdi Karbasian says further discoveries are expected to increase its reserves by 50-100% given “many promising signs which we have seen”.

For both concentration and pelletizing, nine production units have been designed which will lead to a transformational change in the regional economy and bring about development and employment to the local residents, he said.

Sangan, near the border with Afghanistan in Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province, is an underdeveloped backcountry. It is already seeing development rolling on its way, as new roads are being paved, a rail track is laid and water brought to its doorsteps.

Karbasian said the project will create a robust downstream chain in Sangan where “the soil will find added value and turn into the dollar”.

Some of the purchases for the plants have been made from Italian foundry equipment maker Danieli SpA before the Europeans intensified sanctions on Iran.

For now, five domestic consortiums and another consortium comprised of two Chinese and four Iranian firms have undertaken to provide investment.

Iran’s biggest mill, also the Middle East’s largest, is currently Mobarakeh Steel Company which produces 7.2 million metric tons of steel per year.

There are also several private steel plants, each under 100,000-ton capacity, scattered around the country.

Iran plans to quadruple steel production to 55 million tons a year by 2025 to keep pace with demand in its industry and an economy being billed as one of the emerging Next Eleven.

Steel is a strategic commodity for the country of about 80 million. It is crucial to Iran’s massive oil and gas industry, automotive sector which is the Middle East’s largest as well as transportation and water supply networks, urban centers and a mammoth construction sector and its employment.

Karbasian said Iran is currently the world’s 10th country in terms of mineral deposits but the country can improve its ranking on the table with more discoveries as many fields have never been examined.

“To put it into perspective, discoveries have been made only on 100,000 km of the country’s 1.6 million km mineral fields,” he said.

“Iran’s is among the world's top countries in terms of gas and oil reserves; while those reserves are running out, the Sangan iron ore mine is being described as the second Assaluyeh which contains many job opportunities and unique potentials for foreign exchange earning and development,” Karbasian added.

South Pars is the world’s largest gas field near the Iranian city of Assaluyeh which the country develops in over two dozen phases.

This is fantastic news! The important part is also the one showing how despite the fact we currently rank 10th in mineral reserves, only a fraction of our country has been properly searched. Just imagine how much more reserves there is still to find!
To my eyes, Khameni realized the emergency in two things. First, Some areas of Iran is very under developed by Iranian average standards and this will soon become a source of national security concerns.. These areas including South East, East, Persian gulf and Oman sea shores were left undeveloped due to many reasons. One of them was political. Every president used to take care of its own provinces first. This was a wrong policy that made Iranian developments very uneven. Recently, some regional and Western enemies are investing hard on minorities living in these regions. They take the advantage of weaker development in their areas as a good sign that IR don't like them developed, therefore they need to separate from Iran... Recently there are signs that IR authorities realized the emergency. They focused on Makran-Jask Corridor + Ilam province + Bushehr Province and Khurasan e Jonoubi Province. This must have been done decades ago. But late is better than never!

With simple rule of thumb, if only %50 of all projects Iranian government, Foreign investors and Iranian private sector designed and started to work on get fruity, then we will see huge improvement in economical, industrial and national security aspects of the country.

Despite what most think, Sistan va Balouchestan, Khurasan e Jonoubi and Hormozgan has many local, native young graduates that can be employed by all these projects.

Sangan khaf mineral area is a huge bond for eastern Iranian people. It has trillions of dollars of money under its soil. The good thing is that Khameni insists that they must lower the current level of raw-mineral exports and bring added-value to this wealth. Unfortunately, Sangan Khaf mines have no sufficient water for steel factories. All they can do is to process the raw Iron into pallets and concentrates and ship it by train to new steel factories that are going to be built in Makran-Jask region on the Indian Ocean beach. Another good thing is that South Khorasan province has low population so few mega projects like this will make them rich and employed.

Currently Iranian industries are working with less than half of their capacity due to sanctions. This ready-to-revive capacity + all the new tens of billions of dollars of investment in Makran-Jask corridor will make Iranian industry to jump up by hundreds of percents of growth and consequently, giving IRanian GDP a real boost.

Iranian mines are only a small fraction of what Iranian soil and underground can offer. I think Iran is the most affluent nation on earth of all gas, oil and minerals are taken into account... This means we have a good chance to build our industrial revolution based on soley local raw material. This is an advantage that few nations enjoy.

A question:

IF you look at Iranian map in google map or other maps, you clearly see that Iran looks much bigger than 1,6 million square meters. Compare Iranian surface with that of Saudi Arabia.. They seem quite the same but in numbers KSA is bigger than Iran by nearly %40... Is it just me or you noticed that too?

Ahmadi nejad once talked about this, that IRCG mapping results are very different than the numbers given to us by Westerners a century ago... Ahmadi nezjad said Iran is 1.8 and something and not 1.6 million m2...

I know this too that as countries go up in Latitude their distances and surface area seems misleading... but
can anyone here use a software in google map to measure Iranian surface area approximately?

@scythian500 bro, as usual thanks for your informative post!
As for your question regarding the area, I have no idea. But Iranian officials refer to Iran as the largest country in the region thus 1.6 is probably not correct as far as Iran is concerned.

Great news, out of the the muslims nation, I feel Iran is the one will come out the strongest in 10-15 years time, due to science, good leaders and now natural resources

Never forget what Iran has accomplished now is under the most severe sanction regime in history of the planet. I wonder how many other nations would have even survived, never mind do what Iran did under the sanctions.

Eastern Iran will also get a boost when the Indo-Iranian port becomes fully functional

very right. None of the other nation could have survived such cruel sanctions and isolation for that long. Not only sanctions failed to block Iran Advances in Science, the enemies failed to isolate Iran too like they isolated Iraq or yemen or Syria or north korea. Gratitude to Iran's policy makers and defenders of the Great Nation.

They were successful in isolating Shias globally but it is IRAN that foiled the enemies efforts of millennium just in 2-3 decades.

Please start one poll, which countries were behind the cruel sanctions and tried isolating IRAN.
