Quakes, low to medium intensity, continuously happen in this region. One can almost get used to it. This one, though, was moderately big. A big one was predicted to occur for some time now. This was a big one but not THE big one everyone feared might happen.

Hopefully, we will not get to see the big one, as it were.

Hopefully is not a word I would take solace in considering that one big shock can flatten an entire valley and cause devastation worth billions of dollars !

Well we live under constant threat of quakes. Or region falls under Zone 5, the highest seismic activity zone of India.
Hopefully is not a solace but reality. Thankfully building codes are sufficiently tough. Over 90% of buildings in my honetown have survived unscathed even though the epicentre is quite close.

Seems like there have been a lot of earth quakes in the last 12 months :(, hope the damage and loss of life doesnt increase further and things get back to normal soon.

Small earthquakes are a necessity so that chances of bigger earthquakes (like the one that happened in Nepal) happening gets reduced. The casualties mainly occur because of faulty concrete structures. The traditional Assam type buildings are one of the most structurally stable designs. This building practice needs to be adopted in Zone V regions.

inalillahi wainailaihi rajiun

Hoping not too much damage occured

10 people in total, from all over the region, reported killed. Around 100 injured in Manipur, some are critical, mostly from Imphal city imakeithel market area. A friend of mine, from the epicenter "noney" village , said except for damages to their house and other buildings ,no death has been reported from the village and the surrounding areas so far, but 2 people have been seriously injured and needed transfer to regional institute of medical sciences for treatment.

Felt a massive earthquake at about 4.30 AM Indian Standard Time.

Was woken up rudely by the quake. No apparent damage to my home or nearby structure's at Silchar.

Apparently epicentre is in Manipur, India. Strength 6.8. May go up.

Earthquake information - EMSC Mobile
Anything between 6-7 on ritcher scale can damage buildings.
Any secondary waves expected???
I hope the number of casualities don't rise.

@halupridol lil bro how are you doing?

There was one about 3.1 soon after .Haven't felt any more. Quakes here are common. This one was very strong, though. No major damage in my area but there has been some damage. No loss of life so far.

Manipur has far greater damage

That's a myth that earthquakes of smaller magnitudes prevent stronger earthquakes. I had a subject called geology, in which we learnt about earthquakes. Every magnitude 6 earthquake = 32 magnitude 5's= 1000 magnitude 4's = 32000 magnitude 3's (and so on for smaller earthquakes).

Yes.
I have felt minor ones when I lived in Nagaland.

Well, a big one in the range of 7.5-9 has often been predicted for this region. Even today the local papers carried reports by a geologist that the risk of the big one is not gone, like you said.

PS 1: Nice to know you had studied geology. I find it interesting from a layman's perspective.
PS 2: Never visited Nagaland. NE people hardly travel within NE itself. A tragedy.

While doing civil engineering I had to study about earthquakes in Geology, in another subject related to dam structures, and steel structure designs also take earthquake into consideration.

A very unexplored but beautiful part of India. If I get time I want to visit this place again.

@BDforever I heard this earthquake caused damage in BD too. How are you doing?
