Another day, another time we weep the demise of a person who became a subject of prevalent extremism in our society. Mashal Khan, a student of Mass Communication at Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan, was lynched to death by an angry mob who convicted him of blasphemy. Whether Mashal Khan committed blasphemy or not, the perpetrators had no right to persecute him and brutally beat him to death. The law of faith or state does not allow any person to take the judgment in their own hands. It is solely the state’s responsibility to deal with it in a certain way.

Mashal Khan’s death reveals the awful prospect of extremism hovering above our society. The mindsets are causing a distressing realisation as how people find it easy and convenient to pass on justice by taking a life. Our efforts for a peaceful and tolerable society went in vain after such barbaric incidents continue to surface. The deceased was interviewed prior to his death and he had some shocking things to say.


Here’s what Mashal Khan said about his university in this interview:
He spoke in Pushto language and talked about the alarming circumstances at the Abdul Wali Khan University.

• Mashal Khan revealed that the vice-chancellor of his university never showed up and students were forced to live a life in oblivion.
• Degrees haven’t been awarded to students. The vice-chancellors have not appeared since 20th of March, leaving the graduate students on a cliffhanger.
• He criticised teachers and accused them of bureaucracy. He also revealed how a single faculty member was in charge of multiple positions.
• He unveiled the reason why there have been mass protests by students because “everyone in authority is a thief here.”
• Mashal also highlighted how his university was charging outstanding dues; other universities normally charged around Rs. 5000 while AWK charged a staggering and unfair Rs. 25,000 from students.
• He demanded a proper vice-chancellor’s appointment who pays attention to students’ concerns.

The guilty in lynching Mashal Khan to death are constantly in the hunt by the police. There have been 20 suspects, while 8 of them have been arrested.


What happened to Mashal Khan is indeed condemnable. Our hearts go down in distress over his demise. We are left with the realisation that how many mindsets need to be changed in our society and it’s increasingly becoming a challenge we have to ultimately deal with.

My theory is that university administrators saw this interview by Mashal Khan and wanted to silence their critics. What a better way to do it than accuse him of blasphemy and then let a frenzied mob finish the job. This is not the first time this has happened.

I have read Das Kapital by Karl Marx also and agree with many of his assertions but it does not make me a Marxists. You are of course entitled to your views. My objection against your post is not that you judged Mashaal to be a Marxist without fully investigating to form a correct opinion. You are however not the only one, intolerance is a national malaise; PTI law maker Ali Mohammed is on record saying that secularists have no place in Pakistan.

What I object is your assertion “Face the consequences”. What consequences? Even if according to your view Marxists deserve to be killed, you seem to be also implying that someone merely accused of doing so deserves losing his life without properly ascertaining whether he was innocent or guilty! This is a very dangerous attitude and result of such mind-set spells total breakdown of law and order.

You are undoubtedly a very learned and educated person; pray tell me following your reasoning; would it be okay that someone who hates you, bribes or coerces a few to swear that you have committed blasphemy in front of a mob, and incites the mob to lynch you without giving you any chance to prove that you were falsely accused?

First of all i would like to thank you for your detailed reply and I try my best to explain my POV
1. As per media reports and my sources he was active Marxist and advocate Marxism.
I have no problem with secularists or even atheists at all.
I have great reservation for Pakistan Secularists that they didn't get the point of all secular theories that they are not against religion but states that state should not follow any religion but at personal level a secular, Marxist could have faith of his choice and free to practice it. But it is a sad fact that most of the Pakistani secularist force their views of Atheist-ism on others and abuse religion which is totally wrong even not a single secular theory support this.

About face the consequence post I mean face the law not mob justice.

Note: We are Sunni Majority country and through process we made a law against blaspheme of any religion even a Muslim can be tried is he use blasphemous language against Christianity.

The facebook secular cross all the limits and abuse our holy personalities especially Prophet PBUH and you know as per Islam one can't become good Muslim or Momin e Kamil till he loves Prophet Muhammad more than his family and every thing and if such person abused by Atheist blasphemer then you can expect spontaneous response.

Your comment suggest that you have already made your mind about his guilt, so what investigation are you actually doing? Its people like you that have made a mockery out of our religion. Say if i declare that your mum or your daughter made a indecent remark about the prophet, do you think that she should be killed just like the way Mashal Khan was killed, or should I have to prove it first and then she have the right to defend herself?

People keep forgetting what the prophet had to endure himself, he was bloodied with stones in Taif, had rubbish thrown at him in Makkah, yet he never killed anyone. Do you guys think that you are better than the prophet to come up with actions that even the prophet didn't declare. in my opinion you guys are the actual blasphemers.

I had spoken the truth since I have pages of his facebook posts with me, anyways the culprits will also got severe punishment.
Dear I never support crowd / mob justice and I condemn killings over non-confirmed crimes.
I just stated the facts which led to his death and for sure I love Prophet PBUH more then any thing or any one else.

Doesn't matter what you have seen, he is not guilty unless a Qazi (Judge) declares him guilty, that is the sharia way.

The problem in Pakistan is that no one has actually studied the religion, and we are left with uneducated mullahs running the show. What do you expect in a country where a cartoon like Dr Amir Liaquat is an alim.
