“So, how’s your Facebook these days?” my friend’s John Wayne-ish uncle asked us.

“It’s fine, nothing special.”, we replied.

“What about 26/11? How did your Facebook treat that?”

“People posted and shared photos and stuff. Paid their respects to the martyrs.”

“The What?”

“The Martyrs. People who were killed in the attacks.”

“You call them martyrs?”

“Why ? Don’t you ?”

“No. I don’t. I can’t, so to say.”

“But why ?”

“Because they were murdered by us.”

Awkward silence!

“You know how we did that? We trusted the wrong people. We put our faith and our power of vote in people who never really cared much. We were weak. We were enamored by the prospect of a bright future. That’s why we chose weaker men to lead us, without paying any heed to history. We abused our power of vote in the way that made these morally weak people our leaders. But the truth is, they didn’t deserve to be where we put them. And they failed. Like us. Their inability to be what they should have been was a chance for those who already hated us but were somewhat at bay. But now they were audacious enough to sneak into our boundaries, hold a city and the city’s best hostage, killing them like their lives were not worth pennies, stuffing them in luxurious palace-like rooms and stripping them naked. Old men, women, children, herded like sheep from one place to another, and hundreds others massacred. They showed us the true nature of our gravest mistake, the misplacement of our trust. And what’s left of it, is labels like ‘Martyrs’ and what have you.
Those who were massacred and those who sacrificed themselves protecting others, do not need puny labels like these. What they need is repentance. From us, from everybody else. Otherwise what we’ll be left with would be leaders who indulge in vanity in gravest crises and their masters, who are adamant on sucking the marrow out of our bones, day and night. And how do they show their ‘sincerity’? They label people as ‘Martyrs’ and that’s the end of it. And what do we do? We express our sympathies for the families of the deceased by our ‘Aahhss’ and ’Ohhsss’ and post their photos over the internet on a yearly basis.

What else will it take to make you guys realize the seriousness of this? Take a stand. If you don’t want to lament over your choices, don’t just sit there. Do what you can. Take an initiative or appreciate and support someone who takes one. Or else twenty years down the line, it will be you, talking like me.”

And he walked out .
