Markets welcome Ramazan with massive price hike

. .
Beef especially better cuts without bone have always been expensive in major cities.

My parents buy chicken from local sources while they buy beef from our home town in KPK (then have a relative deliver it to us whenever they come to isb) even though the distance is around 130 km between both stations.

This is not because of the cost but because they find the quality of meat better relative to what is being sold here (probably because of good feed).

The shopkeepers do increase the cost during ramzan when it should be the other way around.

The khaloos among people in urban areas is at a low point.

Plenty of soul searching is needed.

I have worked in both sub-urban areas far from cities as well as in major cities. In far off areas during lunch time we used to share food which I don't see in offices in major cities.

I picked up that habit from my time in sub-urban areas and now I don't like to eat alone and either eat with someone or not eat at all.

I live in the infidel, ugly West. Here in Ramzan, every grocery store reduces price. You could say its capitalism, but to me thats show of character that we Muslims in general lack. But we will be the first one to give sanctimonious lecture on character, piety, morality.
I think in West it is basically due to larger shops...chain stores:
large grocery stores as they will be less inclined to raise prices for short term gain.

Good going. Price to pay for Naya Pakistan.
And puranay Pakistan mein tou sub angels thay...they never dared increase price during "season" :agree:

Our behaviour during ramadan is a reflection of how limited and twisted our understanding of Islam in general is. The shop keepers rather than trying to attain reward, or even attract new customers, they hike up prices. If you have the one shop with cheaper or regular prices in this climate, clearly you'll do more business and bring in new customers - but people are too short term to do that.

Consumer behaviour is also a joke (this is not reflected to just Pakistani's). Ramadan is supposed to be a time of restraint, you are meant to eat as you would normally eat - but in Ramadan we go extra. Every night is like Eid with multiple courses. Maghrib is an after thought that people try to fit in before isha.
When you are narrow minded you see quick gains...You cant plan ..They kill the golden egg laying chicken due to their impatience...1 of the many pillars of Islam - Patience...is all but lacking in Pakistan...In the West people juice you long term like a leach ....but it doesnt harm the host!

In Pakistan - I know some people literally live on the concept kal ho ya na ho...Aaj hi lootlo!

Well in the city they demand is high so they find cheap feed...Even I hate the taste of some of the meat in Pakistan [I am from the city]...the smell of some is disturbing - or maybe I have a sensitive nose...

I think in KPK you still have desi feed rather than bought feed...the taste in anything based on the feed differs alot!

I don't see a problem here.
Supply and demand says that if the market can bare it, it will pay it.

Now if people become smart and change their buying habits, that will also affect the markets.

Also, this makes a good case for large grocery stores as they will be less inclined to raise prices for short term gain.

Pakistanis are a class apart. The entire year they would not touch dates or fruit chaat or fruit and in Ramadan they would buy these things like crazy. Its all supply and demand. About time this lunatic media stops complaining about price hike.

Check out what happens on easter and thanks giving around the world.

Traders are trading their good deeds with undue profits but what is the public doing? We eat far more than usual, intact we binge eat when we are supposed to eat less.

Is the looting during Ramadan caused by PTI? Without major structural reforms it is just not possible to clamp down on these looters. And then people start crying over government controlling supplies and prices. Traders start screaming. Free market mullahs start barking.
