MARDAN: The ransacked university hostel room of slain Pakistani student Mashal Khan has posters of Karl Marx and Che Guevara still hanging on the walls, along with scribbled quotes including one that reads: “Be curious, crazy and mad.”

The day before, an alleged heated debate over religion with fellow students broke out at the dorm and led to people accusing Mashal of blasphemy against Islam. That attracted a crowd that grew to several hundred people, according to witnesses.

The mob kicked in the door, dragged Mashal from his room and beat him to death, witnesses and police said. The death Mardan is the latest violence linked to accusations of blasphemy in Pakistan.

We’re bringing a bad name to Islam ourselves: Malala condemns Mashal Khan’s murder

Those who knew Mashal described him as an intellectually curious student who openly professed devotion to Islam but asked many questions. “Whatever he had to say, he would say it openly, but he didn’t understand the environment he was living in,” said one of Mashal’s teachers at Abdul Wali Khan University, who declined to be named for fear of retribution.

Crimes related to blasphemy are a serious offence in Pakistan, and penalties range from small fines to the death sentence.

At least 65 people have been murdered over blasphemy allegations since 1990, according to figures from a Centre for Research and Security Studies report and local media, and dozens more convicted of the crime are currently on death row in Pakistani jails.

The government has yet to comment publicly on Khan’s killing.

In March, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif issued an order for the removal of blasphemous content online, and said anyone who posted such content should face “strict punishment under the law”.

Police say they have arrested at least 20 suspects involved in Mashal’s murder and have found no evidence to substantiate blasphemy allegations.

Imam refuses last rites

Rehman, the caretaker, said Mashal was alive when the police arrived, but that they did not approach the hostel until it was too late. “They could have easily saved his life but they stood away from the mob…I heard one officer say it’s good that they sent this non-believer to hell,” he said.

Mardan police chief Mohammad Alam Shinwari denied the allegation that officers did not do enough to save Khan. “When we entered the campus, he had already been killed and the mob was trying to burn his body,” he said.

Judicial inquiry ordered into Mardan lynching

In Mashal’s hometown of Swabi, around 60 km south of Mardan, his father, Iqbal Shaer, said the accusations of blasphemy were unfounded. “First they killed my son and now they are adding salt to our wounds,” he said.

Shaer, who runs a small business selling biscuits and chocolates to local retailers, said he had always been a lover of poetry and literature and encouraged his children to express themselves and appreciate the arts.

He added, “My wife told me this morning that she spent her life taking care of her son, but those who killed him have wasted that long struggle.”

At Mashal’s funeral, the imam at the local mosque refused to lead the last rites, according to Swabi resident Salman Ahmed. A technician who was asked to do so in the cleric’s place was confronted by several people afterwards. Mashal has since been buried.

13 people have been arrested of which almost all are said to be from the student cum political youth wing of the Most Secular political party Awami National Party.

there are reports that ANP people are trying to save of the accused and as per media prople they have succeeded in getting few names out of the list.

That was the reason that victim is being labeled as blasphemer since start. I expressed myself that this case must be resolved with full knowledge to the public w.r.t. details of interrogation/investigation and findings of the same as how a political party, once again, tried to harm Pakistan. VP of the same party's youth wing was involved being on front along with other key members. If they succeeded to take out few names, IMO, the state itself is involved in this murder which is only supporting ANP due to political grudge against provincial ruling party. So also, ANP is in coalition with all the parties against PTI hence, in blindness of politics, it cannot be ignored that the said case is more of based upon other gains with one action.

.
Pakistan is being more and more of a progressive day by day. We are really being concerned by the murder of one person, and that is a good thing! :P

we want short cut to janah... n most of us think by doing any such thing we will be in the list...
am just wondring about the students who lynched mashal
how many were regurlarly praying 5 times a day?
how many were hafiz of quran?
how many were ever imam in prayers?
how many were sheikh ul hadith?
the answer shamefull would be none.
these people should not be in any university
instead mental ward .of hospital

I can sense a Political Distress , ANP will use this as bait for KPK govt, to hurt the image of KPK and IK's PTI.. accusing and punishing the people who murder the Alleged blasphemer can create chaos

This is the case moat probably whereby a mafia tattered Mashal on purpose and seems like it could have been the corruption of staff and ANP members. I have been saying that Blasphemy Law has nothing to do this incident but the name of blasphemy is being used as that culprits can walk away like this. Hopefully, each & every person involved as such, will hanged for murder as well as misuse of blasphemy, as an example.

Exactly. this case has nothing to do with blasphemy, it was just a cover story which failed miserably.

Hopefully, each & every person involved as such, will hanged for murder as well as misuse of blasphemy, as an example.

Inshallah.

As I said in my one post go after the Mouth Pieces (The one Who launched the Rumor Train). Getting close , I wish the same death sentence for them(I know its not legal and its also against Islamic Teaching) but can we do only this time???????????? For once??????

As I said in my one post go after the Mouth Pieces (The one Who launched the Rumor Train).

The one who created his Fake account.
The one who shot him with a bullet.
and
The one who can be seen throwing a huge stone directly on Mashal's head.

All these 3 should be hanged at-least 5 times, each.

For other's , i am good with "to be hanged till death".

I mean if we catch him , we will solve the case,,,,,,, and Y not the same death which that young man died ? Hanged 1 time or 10 does not make any difference in terms of Pain and Brutality which that poor fallow gone throw .
I still have doubts if its ANP (big If)or any other political party, then Govt may not go against them , they will close the case some how.
