MARDAN: Mardan police claimed Friday it has arrested 4100 wanted criminals, including 100 alleged kidnappers and seized a large quantity of weapons from them.

While 50 abductees, including 10 women, were also released in the operation, police said.

Briefing the media here, Deputy Inspector General Mardan Syed Akhtar Ali Shah said operation was underway in Mardan and Swabi against the suspected criminals.

A large number of commandos carried out the search operation to arrest them, he said, and added over 4000 wanted criminals and about 5000 armed people were arrested in raids.

Police also seized 1500 Kalashnikovs, 2000 guns, 1500 rifles, 7000 pistols, 200,000 bullets, 15 hand grenades, one heavy machine, five stain guns, two rocket launchers and light machine gun.

Well not really. The 4100 arrested were not related or wasn't one group per se. In fact I am amazed 4100 people had only 1500 Klashinkovs. The rule of thumb in NWFP is, every man has a gun. Every other man has two. Every household, on average (say of 5 family members), have three atleast. And if you have a large family, the number becomes countless.

It's very common in NWFP to have more than a few weapons and quiet a large amount of amunition on hand. It's traditional/Cultural thing. So nothing surprising here.
