The government has taken the formal decision to announce Mar 25 as Genocide Day to commemorate the atrocities launched by the Pakistan Army on the Bengalis on that night in 1971.

The proposal to observe the day internationally has already been sent to the United Nations, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam says.

The Cabinet cleared the proposal to announce the Day in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday.

Secretary Shafiul said the Cabinet also cleared a proposal to include the Day as category 'Ka' for national and international observation which means the programmes for the Day will get the maximum allocation and specific people will take part in those.

Parliament passed a motion to observe the Day on Mar 11. After the clearance by the Cabinet, the Day will be observed nationally in Bangladesh from now on.

A total of 56 MPs, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Raushon Ershad, took part in the discussion on the motion, which read: "It is Parliament's opinion that Mar 25 be declared Genocide Day to commemorate the genocide conducted by the atrocious Pakistani forces on the black night of Mar 25, 1971, and necessary steps are taken to have the Day recognised internationally.''

Asked whether the Day will be observed this year, the secretary said the matter depends on the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs. "I don't know if they are ready," he said.
About the international observance of the Day, he said the foreign ministry sent the proposal to the related UN agency.

The Pakistan Army swooped on the unarmed innocent Bengalis on the night of Mar 25, 1971, to subjugate their struggle for freedom.

Codenamed ‘Operation Searchlight’ they carried out genocide in the first hours of that night in Dhaka.

Bengalis put up a valiant resistance and snatched victory on Dec 16 after nine months of Liberation War.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared independence before being arrested by the Pakistani forces on that night.

As BAL sucks at International lobbying, most probably this proposal is going to get rejected...

How many people were killed in March 25th? Who were they?

Can't wait to see BD troll reaction here after their "best friend" China vetoes it (if it even gets that far).
We would not mind Chinese veto in this case.We all know, how strong China-Pakistan relationship, which is good from Bangladeshi perspective.BD-China relation will remain as strong as ever.

Yeah you speak for SHW and her govt yet again! Its ok, dont worry, it will be sunk well before China has to embarrass you (you will probably self-sabotage it somehow to begin with).

Bangladesh is a genuine weakling in world diplomacy. You haven't even gotten India to recognise this "day"....and you already setting sights on UN....where most people have not even heard the word "Bangladesh"....or forget it right away after it comes up.....along the lines of other "notable" B-letter countries like Burkina Faso, Benin and Burundi.

Seems SHW and her clique have much free time to pursue useless agendas instead of much needed reforms.

you are living in a fools world if you believe this issue will somehow hamper BD-China relation.I don't think this will go that far which will require Chinese veto. This day is mainly for internal purpose and to irritate Pakistan.China did supported Pakistan in 1971 and they didn't recognize BD until Sheikh Mujib was dead, but that didn't prevent Awami League to form close relation with China.

We all know,China supported Pakistan in 1971 for geopolitical realities and we have no bad filling about China for that.A lot of countries didn't want Pakistan to breakup. We have no bad feeling for that against those countries.Chinese support for Pakistan was limited to occasional lip services and they tried to persuade Pakistan to stop military crackdown and find a political solution in East Pakistan in close bilateral meeting. They didn't help Pakistan during war time materially to conduct genocide in BD.If that was the case, then there might be a cause to have an issue with China. But there was none. So,Bangladeshi people or Awami league neither have any bad feeling against China and they became the most crucial partner of BD in the last 40 years.Do you think anyone in BD will jeopardize this relationship?

We are not hell bent to recognize this day by others.UN submitting is done to do a point scoring against Pakistan which interfered in war crime trial in BD.We all know it is a long process and may not bear the desired outcome.Even Armenian didn't get their recognition from most of the countries.

LOL. You couldn't point score if you tried. You have to mean something to Pakistan first. They will definitely continue to criticize your genocide "trials"....while ignoring and laughing at these genocide day shenanigans at the UN. It does little to improve state of BD diplomacy projection to have these failed attempts in world fora.

We all know it is a long process and may not bear the desired outcome.

Nah it will be a DOA process and quite a short one too. There will be no general floor talk/debate on it, forget "outcome" (much less a desired one). At best SHW can mention it in some address to UN....just like all world leaders announce x,y,z to blow some steam off in the GA (some of hugo chavez and castro claims were pretty entertaining I have to say).

Even Armenian didn't get their recognition from most of the countries.

Armenia has the distinction of actually getting countries outside its borders to recognise their genocide (including several powerful countries).

Can same be said about BD (you have hard time convincing even yourselves)? And you are talking about Armenia not getting "most" countries to recognise. You aren't even in the riffraff schoolyard sprint and they are in an Olympics marathon....dont compare yourselves to them please, its complete different situation.....as sad as it is that they are like 50 times smaller in population to begin with.

a ==> highly unreliable and self serving opportunists.

b ==> they are our time tested friend.
well technically speaking a & b are mutually exclusive events.

.
This is a serious issue and UN not going to open the pandora's box. Next day the armenians will want one, Jew will want another. Even the red Indian will come for their genocide day as well.

.
True. But what will happen is it will go to the global stage and get the panties of Pakistani diplomats on fire. It will embarrass them. Hasina is a great troll, she knows very well how to troll Pakistan. I am just loving it, just look ay the reactions of Pakistanis heheh. On one hand they say they don't care about BD, on the other hand they got their panties on fire
It will just open the door to question the 3 million death in 1971. They will also bring bihari massacre in front.

You have to look this things from the angle of power balance.Capacity to do harm is not equal between Pakistani force and Mukti bahini. There is a clear case of powerful aggressor and powerless victims in 1971 war.Victim doing some reprisal acts should not be equated with what Pak force and their collaborators done. There were reprisal attack against German nazi army as well as German civilian(regretfully) after end of ww2.But nobody equate those acts with what nazi Germany did.Pakistan or their collaborators can bring all the case they want, that will be examined, but they can't hide their genocidal intention and deed in 1971 war.We should look for a debate in UN about this things even if that means question mark put on 3 million dead figure. But what figure they conclude,it will not be a small figure. We want breaking of silence in this matter.Remember, there is no bad publicity.

Whatever figure it comes with but will not be remotely close to 3 million. That will damage AL credibility for the next 100 years.
At least PK had an inquiry commission which put the number 25000, Bangladesh does not even have it either. UN will go by only legal figures..

Am sure our Chinese brothers will through this proposal in dustbin
