WASHINGTON: The U.S. Capitol was in lockdown on Thursday after gunshots were fired outside the building, injuring several people including a law enforcement officer, a Senate aide and a Capitol police officer said.
"Shots fired outside the Capitol. We are in temporary lock down," Senator Claire McCaskill said on Twitter. Police were seen running within the Capitol building and outside as vehicles swarmed to the scene.
The U.S. House of Representatives and Senate were in session when the gunshots were heard. The U.S. government was partially shut down this week when lawmakers failed to agree on a budget. Senate leaders were locked in their offices.
The shots were fired near the Hart Senate Office Building at2nd St and Constitution Avenue Northeast, only a few blocks from the U.S. Supreme Court.
At least ten gunshots have been reported so far.
Emergency vehicles converged on the scene, focused on the north side of the iconic landmark, where an AFP photographer saw visitors scattering and ducking for cover.
Just over a mile away, the White House was also placed in lockdown, with Secret Service agents in tactical gear deploying around the building.
Senator Sherrod Brown told AFP he had been walking with a colleague from a nearby senatorial annex when he had heard shots and been forced to take cover behind an SUV.
An order was given over the Capitol speaker system to shelter in place because of an active shooter situation.
Sen. Harry Reid told media there was “one injury” in the shooting at the Capitol.
Reports indicate the shots may be associated with a car chase that happened near the U.S. Capitol. Several people may be hurt.
People standing outside the Supreme Court across the street from Congress were hurried into the court building by authorities.
Police called in a Medevac helicopter, a Senate aide and a U.S. Capitol policeman said.(Agencies)
