New Delhi appears to be purposefully cooling its long-standing and intense military cooperation with Israel as India’s dependence grows on oil and gas imported from Iran.

In a move last week largely overshadowed by India’s successful test of an Agni-5 missile with a range of 5,000 kilometres and capable of raining nuclear warheads on most of China, New Delhi took an unprecedented swipe at an Israeli arms company.

Israel’s Military Industries (IMI) had a $70-million guarantee confiscated by the New Delhi government and was banned from doing business in India for 10 years for allegedly attempting to bribe the director-general of India’s OFB-Ordinance Factory Board.

It was the first time the Indian government has ever attempted to penalize a foreign company for breaching contractual anti-bribery provisions.

In a country where backhanders are more the norm than the exception, this was clearly a move intended to send a message.

The symbolism of the New Delhi government’s action was not been lost on anyone, especially as Israel has for years been the first or second major supplier of military equipment to India, their intelligence services have cooperated since the 1960s, and most recently they have worked closely together to counter Islamic terrorist groups.

But as India works to find ways around the American-led new round of sanctions against Tehran aimed at halting the regime’s nuclear development program, New Delhi appears ready to sacrifice its close military liaison with Israel in order to maintain its supply of oil from Iran.

India imports about 12 per cent of its oil needs from Iran at a cost of about $11 billion a year. There is also the prospect of a direct pipeline link across southern Pakistan to Iran’s massive Pars natural gas reserves.

Early last week Israel made every effort to dissuade New Delhi from making its potentially far-reaching gesture against their bilateral military and intelligence relationship.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dispatched his security adviser Yaacov Amidror to New Delhi to try to sort things out with Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony, but to no avail.

In competition with four other bidders, the Israeli company, IMI, obtained the $260-million contract to build a factory for OFB-Ordinance Factory Board to manufacture specialized charges for the army’s large 155mm howitzer artillery.

But the contract contained an anti-bribery “integrity pact” and it was this that was invoked by the New Delhi government to seize the $70-million guarantee.

The Israeli company denies the allegation and points out that an Indian court has already ruled that the government’s seizure of the money was improper. IMI intends to appeal the decision.

Now, it is entirely possible that India’s apparent breach with Israel is a piece of performance art aimed at promoting confidence in Tehran, affirming New Delhi’s independence from Washington’s apron strings, and placating the pro-Palestinian left-wing parties in the Indian parliament on which the government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh often depends for survival.

There are many governments that find it politic to vilify Israel in public while happily doing business or fostering security links in private.

Israel is used to dealing with such antics and is usually happy to go along with the charade.

India, the country with the world’s second largest Muslim population after Indonesia, did not establish formal diplomatic relations with Israel until 1992. However, the Indian intelligence service, the Research and Analysis Wing, and its Israeli counterpart Mossad have worked together against perceived threats such as Islamic extremism in the Middle East and Pakistan, and the weapons proliferation habits of China and North Korea, since the late 1980s.

This relationship became closer and more pointed after the 2008 attack by Pakistan-based terrorists on India’s commercial centre, Mumbai.

India has become the largest customer for Israeli military equipment, spending about $1.5 billion a year on average.

For India, Israel is its second largest arms supplier after Russia, though in some years Israel is the top source.

The materials supplied by Israel range from infantry rifles and anti-missile defence systems to the most sophisticated spy satellites.

And Israel has used Indian waters to test its submarine-launched, nuclear capable cruise missiles.

The two countries also cooperate extensively on the development of military systems, especially missiles. It would also be surprising if there were not some Israeli elements in India’s Agni-5 missile launched two days after the public pillorying of the Israeli company IMI.

Hunger always comes first ......... so it is natural when u are very very hungry and u know u are going to be more hungry then at that time you dont need weapons but food to consume so that u can satisfy ur hunger..........

India is energy hungry and it is making a sensible decision i would say..........

It's business nothing else. You will see more defence tenders going Israel's way.
We need Iranian oil and Israel weapons and tech. We are buying it from both.
In case of war India's stand will be neutral. Both nations know it

. .
given the kind of relations we have with Israelis, they are pragmatic enough to realize our needs. It would hardly make a difference to our relations with either nations.

Cooling military ties :woot:

I must say the author have no iota of an idea how deep the military ties are... and when it comes to buying oil ? We are doing it through barter system (50%). So whatever crude we are buying, only 50% worth of it is actually available to IRAN to use it for it's alleged nuclear weapons.

Our ties with IRAN can't be decided by ISRAEL or vice versa.

India and Israel understand each other's issues and are prepared to give each other elbow room for strategic maneuvers like equal friends.

Exactly, some ignorant would term it as betrayed rather then diplomacy. India has always set an example of matured diplomacy all over the world.

I do not think oil is the major factor. India can turn to Saudi Arabia or other countries for its oil and reduce the dependency on Iran. India will cease to be a influencial player in Afghanistan and lose any opportunity it has to be a player in Central Asia if it loses the support of Iran. India's access to Afghanistan and Central Asia is through Iran, most notably Chahabar port. India's $11 billion investment planned in Afghanistan is its largest in a foreign land and that will get jeopardized if India-Iran relationship get affected.

Nicely put... Pakistan will not give us access to Afghan, so we need Iran..

There's no place for emotions in diplomacy, both sides are mature and pragmatists- they know how the world works. Maintaining relations with one nation does not nessercarily effect relations with another- India has demonstrated this beautifully in the past. Someone can look at a few past news stories and jump to the wrong conclusions irt Israel-India ties but everyone in the know is aware of what is going on. Don't you worry your pretty heads about it.

Everything is not always black and white, there are loads of grey areas as well, We cannot ignore Israel, they cannot ignore us, we cannot ignore Iran and in turn they cannot ignore us as well. Both sets of relations are deep rooted and true test of these relations will be during war, not now.

India must have managed Israel's concerns wrt Iran - India, there's not a peep from anyone about the attack on the Israeli diplomats wife and no updates on investigations, Its as if the whole issue has been swept under the carpet.

.
Some vested interests are doing psy-op and using India's dealing with both to instigate Israel. May be Israel trying to say that either you buy Iranian oil or watch military ties getting cold.

India will find the way......
