Manipur polls: 30per cent votescast in three hours

January 28, 2012 11:49 IST Imphal: About 30 per cent of the 17.40 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the first three hours in Manipur legislative assembly elections today, officials said. Long queues of enthusiastic voters were seen at many polling booths across the valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishenpur with people waiting their turn on a sunny morning. Official reports said hundreds of people were seen outside RDS High School in Wangkhei constituency in Imphal East district where former minister and senior Congress leader Yumkham
Erabot is pitted against his arch rival O Henry of Manipur State Congress Party. Henry is nephew of Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh. A large number of voters were seen at the playground of Wangkhei girls high school in Yaiskul constituency in Imphal East district as they could not find place to stand in the queue as the line was already too long. Trinamool Congress nominee and former education director Hareswar Goswami faces his cousin Jayadev Sharma in the seat. In Thoubal constituency in Thoubal district, where the Chief Minister crosses sword with his arch rival O
Indira of BJP, brisk polling was reported from many polling stations. In Thangmeiband seat in Imphal West district, where former chief minister and NCP chief Radhabinod Koijam faces former BJP chief M Bhorot Singh in a multi-cornered contest, heavy polling was reported from many polling stations. Reports said turn out of women voters was much more at many polling stations in the valley districts. In hill districts, polling was heavy at Kalapahar, Motbung and Kangpokpi in Kangpokpi constituency in Senapati district. In some interior hill districts, polling at some booths was low because of cold weather, reports said. Turn out at Ukhrul was reported to be very low. Official sources said so far no untoward incident was reported from any part of the state. A helicopter was kept ready to meet any emergency situation, official sources said adding
para-military forces were deployed at all the polling stations. Police and para- military forces were seen patrolling at many parts of
the state particularly in valley districts to check movement of ultras who might disrupt the poll process.

2 CRPF personnel killed, bombs defused in Manipur

Two CRPF personnel on poll duty were killed in an ambush by militants even as four powerful bombs planted near polling stations were seized and defused before polling for the Manipur assembly began on Saturday morning.

The CRPF personnel were killed on Friday when militants
ambushed them in Ukhrul district, official sources said.
They said the bombs were suspected to have been planted by militants in Khurai Chingangbam area, Sawombung High School, Khomidok in Imphal East district and Naoremthong High School area in Imphal West district to disturb the polls.

The explosives were seized and defused, they said.

An official report said an 80-year old woman was killed last Thursday in interior Tamenglong hill district when suspected militants attacked a Congress party office with bombs.

NO no no ... the seccession issue is long dead.. things are very different and complex now for outsider(outside GOI and local populace)to understand,Manipur is caught in very different issue .. Manipur is sharpely divided along ethnic lines ,the dominant Meite vs the hill nagas vs the Kukis.. NSCN chief Muivah is from Ukhrul district of Mnaipur and is pursuing his hot agenda of unifying Naga dominated areas and thereby causing a fear among the Kuki people and strong opposition from Meiti people.. so much so that this time Nagaland People fronts is feilding their own candidate and nagaland chief minister Neiphu Rio came for campaigning (on behalf of Naga people or maybe NSCN-IM).. all the bomb blast and violence is more about who can gain more ground by intimaditing people and candidtae of opposition and to gain more power in the assembly..and remember all this in the background of events such as recent blocakde and AFSPA (which I stongly belive should be removed)

I think it can be removed if Manipur Assembly unanimously vote for its removal. According to Indian Constitution, The Central Govt could not impose something on the states forcefully.
