Mangoes in trouble again

July 24, 2015

Pakistani mango export is in trouble again. According, to the ministry of commerce the country has lost three of its five lifelines due to the issue of live fruit fly larvae. After two more export rejection would result in a 5-year ban on Pakistani mango exports to the European countries.

And it wouldn't be the first time; last year Pakistan faced a similar situation when presence of fruit flies in shipments sent abroad drew harsh warnings from the European countries.

The EU can anytime slap a ban on the import of mangoes and other fruits and vegetables from Pakistan. That was already done to India, last year.

It is not that the government has not taken any steps. In 2014, several quality checks were enforced. These quality checks yielded results as in 2014 the interceptions in Europe dropped sharply to just three from 236 consignments in 2013.

Last year Pakistan exported 90,714 tons of mangos officially as compared to 61,000 metric tons during 2013. However, the fear is growing in the industry that this time around Pakistani mango exports will come under the knife. Quarantine policies of EU are becoming stricter each year, and if Pakistan is unable to cope with stricter policies it will lose the most lucrative export market for mangoes.

Exporters believe that the problem is at the end of growers and the government because they can do little to control the fruit fly. Pakistan Fruits and Vegetables Exporters Association (PFVA) wants the government and growers to realize diseases in mangoes and other fruits are on the rise.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research last year made it mandatory to perform hot water treatment on all mango exports to the EU. However, the agricultural experts argue that what government is doing is taking care of the symptoms.

The actual problem is still present. The agricultural experts agree with the exporters that unless the government trained the growers and further invest in research the problem would not be solved.

Research in agriculture sector is pathetic....No idea why no one is bothered despite Pakistan relies heavily on the agriculture sector!
Then export it to China n Russia.

. . . .
i missed Pakistani mango's last year. this year they were horrible. too small and wrinkly the previous year before the ban they were huge, juicy and sweet, next year should come with improvements hopefully (having doubt already)

.
No need to export mangoes keep them local
We are already economically deprived....

Maybe you should tell the elites no need to import shit keep it local!

Export market makes our economy if we cut that then basically we will become not only economically isolated but wont be able to repay the debt tinday brothers are blindly taking!

Why have hope...Nothing is changing in the ignorant agricultural dept...I am not even sure who the ignorant minister is! Should right to him and tell him he is some shit!

When you are uneducated, your superiors are corrupt and not bothered, your govt isnt education friendly let alone know about proper trade channels...and to top it up your govt is has more incompetent people from quota to safarish systems....Cant really expect a miracle now can we?

People don't understand how things work in Pakistan or developing nations in general. It's complicated. Corruption, mismanagement, politics and a plethora of other problems are indeed an obstacle towards progression.

Thankfully, over here in The Netherlands we have started receiving the Pakistani mangoes. I enjoyed many during Ramadan.

Sure...But dont ever bother fixing our quality!

Pakistan also faced a prolonged ban on different fruits by Russia. Now they are treating exporters from Pakistan individually rather than putting ban on whole country.
Exporter and firm has to face penalties on low quality.

How is feeding OTHERS fly eggs and larvae (the reason why these were rejected by EU in the first place) considered thinking about others?

they took measures to prevent such occurrences such as hot water treating them and making the packaging so no fly can reach the mangos, but just towards then end of the season they found yet another infected batch of mangos and guess where they came from.

I aint gonna guess not until you pump in experts and dismiss non qualified assholes sitting in decision making positions not much is gonna be done no one will learn a thing and the cycle will repeat itself

hot water treating
BTW, this is the MINIMUM requirement other treatments can also be done but who wants to help Pakistan's economy by pumping in some funds in research and technology :(
