Malaysia to replace Mig-29 jets with Su-30MKM jets
Malaysia is getting rid of its MiG-29 jets and replacing them with Su-30MKM jets. Malaysia bought 18 MiG-29 jets in 1990. Malaysia has ordered 18 Su-30MKM jets and will order additional 18 Su-30MKM jets to replace the MiG-29 jets, currently 18 Su-30MKM jets delivered to Malaysian Air force, Malaysian Air force will operate 36 Su-30MKM jets in the future.
Malaysia also bought eight F-18D jets in the 1990 and is keeping those, Most of these Russian jets have provided satisfactory service; Malaysia was long a user of American jets, so they have been able to compare Russian and American jets.
The Russian jets cost less than half of American jets, Malaysian Air force finds that an acceptable situation, even though they face better trained pilots flying F-16 jets in neighboring Singapore.
Su-30MKM (Multi-role, commercial, Malaysian) is the latest version of the renowned super-maneuverable Su-30MKI fighter created for India. The Su-30MKM fighter has the same aerodynamically perfect airframe, state-of-the-art engine with the Thrust Vector Control (TVC) and the most advanced digital fly-by-wire system.
The MKM version differs from the MKI by the onboard avionics suite composition tailored to accommodate the customers needs. The fighter is fitted with the modern phased antenna array radar which enables simultaneous tracking 15 targets and attacking 4 targets.
Su-30MKM avionics suite includes electronic warfare (EW) system and optic-location system with the laser rangefinder supplied by Russias leading manufacturers. Also certain western-made avionics were integrated onboard the fighter: Head-up display (HUD) navigational forward-looking IR system NAVFLIR, Laser Designation pod (LDP Damocles) and some others. Integration of all the avionics systems was carried out with active participation of Su-30MKM Project Team consisting of Malaysian Air force officers and based in Moscow.
