KARACHI
- Nearly two-thirds of the victims of a killer heatwave that swept lower Sindh last week were homeless people, a minister said today, as the death toll in Karachi reached over 1,200.

The city of 20 million inhabitants is a sprawling metropolis with few green areas and has scant facilities for coping with intensely hot weather.

Those living on the city’s streets have little access to shelter or safe drinking water, making them particularly vulnerable to the scorching temperatures.

“About 60 to 65% of the heatstroke victims were beggars and heroin addicts, street people,” Jam Mehtab Dahar, the provincial health minister told.

Zafar Ejaz, a senior health official, said the death toll as of Monday stood at 1,229 across the city’s hospitals.

After peaking at around 45 degrees Celsius on the weekend of June 20 and June 21, the heat subsided to the mid-30s later in the week as the city’s customary cooling sea breeze returned.

Among the remaining 35 to 40% of deaths, elderly women who died in their homes comprised a majority, Dahar said, suggesting power cuts had played a role as people had been unable to use fans or air conditioners.

“The women were at homes and not directly exposed to heat unlike the street people,” Dahar added.

This year’s heatwave has also coincided with the start of the holy month of Ramazan, during which millions of devout Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise to sunset.

That's what the man seems to be saying. The rot runs deep indeed.

Anybody who even implies this should be slapped across the face, not that I am advocating physical violence against him. What a bastard!

Hah! Folks like this are untouchable. I'm sure he gave this statement in the comfort of his air conditioned office, having arrived in his luxurious air conditioned, and you get the picture.

Yes, I know the picture, which is precisely why I am deeply offended. Anybody who was roasted on a motorbike by the hot road below and the hot sun above being held up Punjab Police at Charing Cross while the Ministers leave the Assembly Hall in airconditioned cars will not forget that easily.

It is ''OK'' to spend 10s of Millions on T-55 junk but not ''OK'' to provide bottled water for the poor.

Honestly, how much would it have cost the Government to provide FREE bottled water? Shame on them! And we're worried about foreign agencies trying to break-up our country. It seems we're doing a good job of it. Where has rahmah gone in people! Forget the corrupt government, please if you see someone old thirsty give him a bottle water. I know it's ramadhan, but let him or her decide if they can keep the fast. Life ALWAYS takes precedence and this is Allah's mercy!

Unfortunately, security and economic considerations cannot be dealt with by rahmah alone, ramadhan or no ramadhan.

If we use your logic, we should stop doing everything (no development, no education, no work) and put all of our efforts into security. And in the mean while let people die, the same people it is claimed to protect!

This is not my logic. Pakistan and its Army decided a long time ago to put security above all else.
