Major among 14 security personnel killed in Balochistan shootout


Quetta: At least 14 security personnel including a Major were killed and 16 others wounded in a shootout that took place during a search operation in Chamlang area near Quetta city of Pakistan’s Southwestern province Balochistan on Monday.
Sources said that the incident took place when Frontier Constabulary (FC) officials were carrying out search operation in Loralayi in the suburbs of the provincial capital.
They said that an FC Subedar was also killed in the incident. The dead were shifted to a nearby hospital while a large contingent of FC and police cordoned off the area and intensified the search operation.
Balochistan has been witnessing a low level insurgency by the nationalists, demanding more provincial autonomy.

ISLAMABAD, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 14 Pakistani paramilitary troops have been killed in clashes with militants in the country's southwestern Balochistan province, security sources and local media reported on Monday.

TV channels reported that the clashes erupted in the Chamalang mountainous area late Sunday night after armed militants attacked the Frontier Corps (FC) troops, which continued until Monday morning.

Local TV Ajj reported that 14 soldiers have been killed in the shootout so far. There are no official comments on the casualties.

Sources said that 11 FC troops were also injured and the bodies and injured have been evacuated in helicopters. The injured were airlifted to a military hospital in Quetta, the provincial capital.

TV channels had earlier reported that four FC soldiers had been killed in the clashes.

Security sources said that the FC forces have been deployed in the area to guard the huge coal mine resources in the area.

They said that militants from Baloch anti-government groups routinely attack the security forces in the region.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Sources said that the insurgents could either belong to Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) or to a new group Baluch United Liberation Army (BULA) which opposes the presence of security forces in Balochistan.

At least 14 paramilitary soldiers have been killed and 10 injured after gunmen ambushed them in the south-western province of Balochistan, officials say.

The attack took place in the coal-rich Chamalang district, where clashes occurred in recent days.

The army says that separatist rebels are behind the attack.

Baloch rebels have been waging an insurgency for decades, fighting for greater political autonomy and a share of the province's natural resources.

One report says the troops were attacked as they guarded a private coal mining venture in the area.

But the army spokesman is quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying a three-vehicle convoy was attacked as it was travelling from Chamalang to Dukhi.

Balochistan, Pakistan's largest and most sparsely populated province, is rich in minerals and has vast untapped deposits of oil, gas, copper and gold.

As well as a separatist insurgency, the province has also been affected by sectarian violence and Taliban suicide attacks.

Last month Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said that development and reconciliation were the only ways to stop militancy in Balochistan province.

But correspondents say that there is a growing sense of frustration among unemployed youths in the province who are increasingly joining pro-Taliban militant groups or the separatist insurgency.

Other than the obvious rhetoric - We condemn it and stuff!, there is not much they are willing to do. Pakistan is too important for them till 2014.

BUT, if Pakistan keeps pushing in A'stan, CIA could very well change tactics.

Sadly, Indians have little to no knowledge about Balochistan. Indian media doesn't cover it.

What I can't understand: Aren't there SOPs that lay down procedures for securing stretches of roads to be used by the Forces whilst moving in convoys? There have been a number of ambushes in Balochistan and other areas where soldiers have died. The same goes for the CRPF men who were being killed at regular intervals in Maoist hit areas whilst moving in convoys.

There is a procedure called, 'Road Opening' where troops take up positions at varying distances, depending on the terrain, along the entire route before the movement of convoys. If this procedure was being followed, then such ambushes could have been avoided, saving the lives of troops.
