Police on Friday claimed to have arrested main accused of Karachi’s Abbas Town blast along with his three accomplices.

Chaudhry Aslam, SSP CID, told media that Gul Aslam alias Aslam Ustad fled to Waziristan and was arrested upon his arrival in Karachi.

He said that 125 Kg explosive, eight hand grenades were also recovered from his possession.

The officer said that the terrorists were accused of making explosive-laden vehicles in Pakhtunabad and Manghopir areas of the city, adding that raids were being conducted to arrest other associates of the accused.

Chaudhry Aslam claimed that the accused were planning attacks on Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and embassies of foreign countries.

Nearly a dozen people, including three city wardens and a senior worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, were killed in separate incidents in the city on Thursday, police said.

Earlier during the past two days, at least four police officials, including a station house officer of Preedy, had been gunned down in different parts of the city.

The three city wardens were on duty near Britto Road in the Soldier Bazaar area when armed men riding two motorbikes targeted them on Thursday night, the area police said.

A passerby also sustained gunshot wounds in the attack, an official of the Soldier Bazaar police station said.

“The city wardens were performing their duty near Jamaat Khana when four gunmen riding two bikes appeared and fired at them,” said SSP District East Imran Shaukat.

He said that initial investigation suggested that the attackers were being given cover by a car. As many as 11 spent bullet casings were found at the crime-scene, he added.

All the four wounded victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi, where Rao Shahid, Mohammad Farooq and Mohammad Sadiq were pronounced dead while the passerby Mohammad Imran was admitted for treatment.

The targeted killing caused tension in the neighbourhood with immediate closure of shops in the area.

MQM worker shot dead

Earlier, a senior MQM worker and former office-bearer of the party’s students’ wing was gunned down in Federal B Area on Thursday, police said.

They added that the victim was a resident of Block 12, F.B Area.

The incident took place near Payala Hotel within the remit of the Gulberg police station.

The officials said that armed men riding a motorcycle targeted Syed Shiraz Asghar, 35, at his shop. A 14-year-old boy, Fahad, was also wounded in the firing.

The wounded were rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Following the incident, tension gripped the locality leading to the closure of local markets.

A man was shot dead in front of his wife on their way home in Orangi Town, police said.

The officials added that the incident took place in Sector 11 ½ of Orangi Town, said an official at the Mominabad police station.

The official said Mohammad Akram was coming home along with his wife from Baldia Town when he was targeted.

While the victim was carrying Rs30,000 in cash, the gunmen didn’t take away the money, the official added.

He said the victim died before he could be shifted to hospital. Later, the body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities, the police official added.

A young man was shot dead in Landhi on Thursday, police said.

They added that Farooq Shah, 29, was found shot dead in Awami Colony.

The police shifted the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.

The police investigators seized four spent bullet casings of 9mm pistol from the crime-scene. They said that the victim originally hailed from Kohat and resided in Muzaffarabad Colony of Landhi.

At least three people were found shot dead at different places in the city on Thursday, officials said.

The body of an unidentified man was found in Sohrab Goth area, the police said.

They added the trussed-up body bearing torture marks and gunshot wounds was found near Quetta Town, Sohrab Goth.

In the old city area of Kharadar, the body of another unidentified man was found on Thursday morning, police said.

They added the body was spotted near Bilal Shaheed Chowk Masjid. They shifted the body to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities.

The police investigators said the victim, in his mid 20s, wearing shirt and trousers had been shot dead. However, they didn’t find any clue to the victim’s identity or killers.

In North Nazimabad, the body of yet another unidentified man was found in a drain near F-11 minibus stop, police said.

The body was stuffed in a gunny bag, said an official of the Shahrah-i-Noor Jehan police station.

The body bore torture and strangulation marks, the police said. They added that the victim was wearing shalwar kameez.

At least two men were killed when according to police two gangs of rival drug peddlers clashed in New Karachi on Thursday.

The incident took place at Bashir Chowk, Khamiso Goth, said an official of the New Karachi Industrial Area police station.

The police said that the clash between two groups of drug peddlers left Mohammad Akarm, 45, and Arshad Khan, 30, believed to be drug peddlers, dead.

Fears loomed over the city after the fresh attack on three city wardens on Thursday night prompting the commissioner of Karachi to ask all wardens to report to their respective headquarters.

“We will meet all officials concerned today (Friday). Our wardens are unarmed and always remain a soft target,” said Commissioner Hashim Raza Zaidi.

“The recent trend poses serious threat to their lives and we have decided if Rangers and police personnel are not deployed along with them for their security, they will not be able to perform their duties.”

The fresh attack came as a grim reminder of the March 30 assault in which three city wardens were gunned down in an almost similar fashion in North Nazimabad.

The commissioner said that 1,500 wardens helped manage traffic and supplement job of law-enforcement agencies. “But unfortunately they have again become a target. If security arrangements are not assured I fear we will lose their services,” said Zaidi.

Meanwhile, the Sindh government has banned display of arms in public and cancelled permits to carry them across the province for indefinite period.

“The Sindh government, in pursuance of the notification issued by interior ministry, has withdrawn all permission letters/orders for carrying and displaying weapons in relaxation of ban under section 144. There will be a complete ban on carrying and displaying all kinds of weapons across the province,” said a home department handout.

Earlier, Sindh IGP Shahid Nadeem Baloch warned of ‘possible security threat’ during electioneering and asked the law-enforcement agency personnel to be on high alert.

The IGP directed SHOs to visit polling stations ahead of polls and make security arrangements keeping in view possible security threat during election process, said a statement issued by the central police office just hours before three city wardens were killed in a targeted attack.

He warned the SHOs of strict departmental action if they were found negligent. An effective communication system be ensured during elections and pickets be set up at entry and exit points, he said.

He asked additional IG to prepare recommendations about presence of bomb disposal squads at zone level in districts east and south and issued directives to carry out surgical raids in troubled areas and remove barriers fixed in streets and roads across the city after consulting area people.
