HAL's Light Utility Helicopter

Indian state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) will conduct the maiden flight of the under development Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) in December.

“Efforts are on to have the first flight in December,” an unnamed defence official was quoted as saying by the Hindu news daily Friday.

The 3.1 tonne single engine helicopter is powered by the Shakti engine which powers the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) as well as the LCH and is intended to replace the ageing Cheetahs and Chetaks with the three services.

As per plan, HAL intends to build four prototypes by 2017 and start production by 2018. The Army and Air Force together have committed to purchase 187 LUHs.

It will be competing with this bad boy. IA/IAF has already committed to around 200 Ka-226 and hopefully it will be made in India.

Total requirement for LUH is around 600, so it will be fun. :D

Nowadays PSUs are under extreme pressure to deliver. Good going. Lots of orders in waiting for light utility helicopters. If HAL managed to put weapon systems on board. Then it will clearly have upper hand over its Russian counterparts.

so
200-ka-226
200-luh
300+ -mi17
200-hal dhruv
now what do we have-
a giant helicopter fleet

Indian helicopter program progress is very good comparative to their other programs. That's indeed a good achievement.

When you say other programs I hope you meant other defence programs.
But yes, you are right in that respect, our rotary wing aircraft program is going way better than our fixed wings one.

It late actually , after all we had many components ready from DHrUv, and still this is only first flight., will take few more years to get inducted,.

No competition will occur. The IAF and IA have a firm commitment for 187 HAL LUHs no matter what.

Reducing dependence on foriegn arms for our defence needs is very important for our national security...So in short Make in India is very important part of our National Security....

If you want to reduce foreign dependence then learn to produce world class weapons. Its not your life at risk, you are living happily with your family. It is the Indian jawan who is risking his life with inferior weapons.

And building by TOT is not reducing dependence on foreign firms. The engine of arjun, LCA, BVR missiles and every critical weapon is of foreign origin. So what is make in India?
