Few facts

The deal is a win win situation for both countries

Sri Lanka post conflict is looking to strengthen its navy to a blue water Navy given it's inheritance of vast area of the Indian Ocean as it's EEZ.. The country, located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, possesses a territorial sea of 21,500 sq. km and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 517,000 sq. km.

India for it's part wants to keep nations in it's region within it's sphere of influence, Given it's own security concerns

These OPV's were ideally not SLN's first choice but given it's security obligations viz a viz India (1987 agreement), Is more than adequate for their role in securing Sri Lanka's position regarding the security of it's EEZ

Frigates and submarines are not in the equation of the SLN atm, Given they're not looking for offensive capabilities post civil war and is not financially viable either at the current scenario

For it's part India is providing these OPV's under a massive line of credit, Which is ofcause is it's sacrifice in order to keep it's security concerns in the region within it's grasp.. Thats real politik for you

India is not the only nation providing maritime security vessels to SLN, Both Australia and Japan have provided off shore patrol ships both to the SLN and SL Coast Guard.. And the US is in the line

These boats are shit. We should get one with big battling ram and huge net, to destroy those fishing trawlers and then catch the fishermen.

SLN doesnt need OPV's to crack some numskulls of those poachers, They're doing very well with their own indigenous Cedric formally known as Arrows and Dvora FAC's

if OPV's cant catch fishing trawlers why pay $150 million for it? i will pay $1 billion for whoever can give me the greatest weapon against fishing trawlers.

Why mince words? All threads are for talking shyte abt India. The first four comments on the threas by Chini owners of this forum prove it. If no Indian will reply, the circle jerk just goes on.

The forum does not care for what quality discussion goes on. If the admins don't want any discipline here, how can posters ensure it?

OPVs would be useful for taking down drug smuggling ,piracy ,Human trafficing etc. OPVs have range and can be armed to pack quite a punch. Fast Patrol Craft are much more useful when catching illegal fishermen

2400 ton OPV is close to corvettes. It lacks offensive weapons. It is suitable for Sri Lanka who want to fight drug smugglers, pirates etc. It is overkill for the civil war days when Sri Lankan navy dealt with LTTE boats

While you are right that the OPV has range, the possibility of them getting armed heavily is practically NIL.

People get confused a lot with naval ship designations and get mixed with firepower and size. OPVs main deal is range, endurance - and you missed out - capacity. A large OPV can carry out many off shore and on shore tasks in all weather that smaller attack craft can not. This is their specialisationand hence it is a capability boost, not a firepower boost though. Striken vessels, humanitarian situations, deterrant patrols in deeper sea - this is where this helps.
