I'm thinking ... Indian Co.'s have about 10 different 4 wheel models now proced under $ 3500.
- Tata's Nano car, Zip Mini Truck, Magic Iris Bus
- Mahindra Mini Truck
- Piaggio Ape Mini Truck
- Atul Motors Mini Truck
- Maruti's cheapest models the 800, Cervo etc.
- Upcoming Bajaj car
- Chevrolet Beat
- Upcoming Hyundai low proce competitor
- Areva or Oreva
- Tara Tiny
- Maybe i or 2 Idon't know like VW. Toyota, Mazda, Proton, Renault, Ford, Citroen, Kia, Fiat etc. offers
Now I ran a quick wiki and google check and found that India might be the largest producer of inexpensive city vehicles already. Other's I checked were BRICS nations, Eastern Europe, Thailand, Mexico and came up with a big 0.
So not only does India have a sustainable conventional auto industry with the biggest motorcycle, bus, truck, jeep, sedan and mini and micro car factories, the missing link- the large 'sedan or car' (Buick, BMW, Merc types) industry is a no-no in today's world; it has developed a massive second tier 'city' vehicles industry as above. Plus the world's largest 3-wheeler industry.
It's this 2'nd tier industry that is unique, massive and pretty amazing. Also dangerous to the Global auto game. Unless countries like Pakistan and/or Indonesia or ...hehe ... Bangladesh or countries in Sub-Saharan Africa suddenly come up with a massive auto industry, client base and eco-system, India's already substantial 2'nd tier auto industry will get super-sized very soon. And change the rules of the game Globally.
After all even Pak & Indo GDP is neck-to-neck to India, but Indian Co.'s are unlikely to give up their 1'st mover advantage.
It is also likely to remain Indian only for the above reasons. Can't get any cheaper than the Indian price, except Chinese price. The average GDP of all other auto industry countries is several times that of India, on average $ 10,000's.
China may have been the only viable competitor in this 2'nd category, except that Chinese GDP is 3-4 times India's which means Co.'s mass market plans target a richer, different layer than India's 2'nd tier industry.
India's massive and increasing 2'nd tier vehicle industry is surely good news for all enthusiats.
