Made in India Vehicles

At 4lakhs base price with dual airbags...that's a good buy!!

Tatas always have good VFM.
gentlemen, any thoughts on why Tata is keeping losing share in the Indian car market? Any particular reasons for its market share drop?

The tables below all sourced from Tata Motor's annual reports directly. Seems Tata is experiencing an unstoppable market share decline.

Sharp !

Tata motor vehicles are not and never were tops in the Indian market, they owned the Truck market for dog yrs. though. Also, this auto business is a very old, complex and concentrated business Globally and the big deal is that both Tata and Mahindra have survived the Globalisation of the Indian market. 1/2 dozen Indian and Global types failed it in the Indian market. Many British and American failed notwithstanding long pedigree.

Surviving legacy Co.'s have also not yet been usurped by emerging country auto or vehicle maker be it Malaysia, Brazil, Turkey, Russia or China.

So with intense and amplifying Global competition in the Indian market the survival of a homegrown or even a Global auto-vehicle maker is a achievement in itself. Sales are not the only metric.
  1. First, sales figures can also be confusing in percentages because of the entry of newcomers in an emerging market which cannibalise incumbent's share of the market

  2. Profit counts for more then numbers in this business, and Tata's JLR purchase is raining money on the parents @ books.

  3. For Tata Motors therefore, maybe the excavator and locomotive parts is more profitable for them to focus on for profits while the auto and vehicle business matures, their auto business is possibly the world's youngest, and surely among the youngest Globally, traditional auto Co.
My personal opinion says that Tata is the Toyota of the future. They cover all price points now wider and deeper then Toyota re: cheapest Tata Nano/ Tata Ace platform to large mid-to-trucks. A hit electric car is the only thing missing, but I feel that they are poised to launch a slew of electric hatchbacks.

I wrote on this earlier 3 posts back.

Further, Tata Motor's rescue of Jaguar/Land Rover has come with a huge payback. Tata's truck and bus business has actually turned out a couple of blockbuster models in recent times re: their lock on the Indian market for eg. Tata 407 and the Tata Ace. Their SUV/MUV segment is successful.

The Ace has spun off to being a self-fulfilling, self-propelling umbrella brand with many versions under it. Any relation to the boom-&-bust Nano is cut, severed and cancelled. Tata Ace is not advertised as Tata Nano's truck version.
  • I have a feeling that they are using JLR profits to re-design and Globalise their piddling Indian auto and auto business only, where they were Johnny come lately's in a world awash with mass produced cars. To wit, Tata's have cross-licence manufacturing operations with many Global entrants in the Indian market like Fiat, and via --> Fiat Jeep Chrysler (Chrysler's owner is Fiat).
If successful, like many Japanese, German and French car makers they will go to the top of the world; alas, if they fail they will fail like British, American and other carmakers. Personally, the parent Tata Motors and the super parent Tata Sons are rainmaker holding Co.'s with so much money that I see no chance of Tata failing the rat race.

Tata's planning a huge push into the electric market with a full-on makeover too.

Most of the companies are loosing shares as more and more companies are entering into market. Those who had entered some time ago are boosting their share and production capacity. Skoda, Renault, Honda, Volkswagen , Nissan, Ford, Fiat are boosting their production and sale. So almost all the old players are loosing the market.

In diesel, SHVC technology has come in India. Maruti has introduced that in Ciaz. It is a Just 1250 CC diesel engine with 89 HP and semi Hybrid engine with mind boggling fuel efficiency and sports car like pick up. If you ride it, you will witness unbelievable power and performance from a small 1248 CC engine which you will find it difficult to believe.

@MULUBJA, the killer app. of the small car game Kia is setting shop (factory) in India. Sad, it's a sub of Hyundai so some cross-cannibalization and share loss to others' is natural.

A useful, optimal and beautiful type with blockbuster family roots is coming. Since Indian cities are choking at the throat, this last-mile vehicle is ideal.

Price : Indian Rs. 5 Lakh's ( US $ 7500)

Indian cities now have mass rapid transport but no last mile connect, so this plugs the gap for neighbourhood last mile connectivity. Nothing like this on the market. In fact, if effective BRT systems are paired with metro and mass rail transit as is happening across approx. 100 cities around India, this vehicle family can form an excellent last mile head end for a good 10 yrs. before road traffic can be 'de-bottlenecked' so roads can be re-claimed for transportation.

Bloody this is awesome. 5 lakh is is such an attractive price that nobody can stop themselves from buying this. Ace is really ace. Though it is a small weight carrier, I have seen it overtaking cars. It can do 125 KMPH. It is a huge success. When I went to but TATA buses for one school, I discussed a lot about TATA ACE with the dealer. This will rock and there is no doubt about it. Engine is good. Some practicallities need to be incorporated. This shall be a big hit in Africa as well as in subcontinent also.

My thoughts exactly. However, most English speaking media types rubbish the mini truck.
No finesse - they say. Doesn't compare well with Suzuki mini vans.

This very Tata Ace family is going electric. Yes, it's a super cheap ... cheapest ? ... truck in the world. While it's a ladder-on-frame truck with lots of rattle and shake, you can argue it's for the cheapest people in the world. But with electric, the rattle and shake will go down.

Off-topic, the Indian vehicle eco-system is throwing up world class, sales beating and good-enough vehicles to build not so much a fan following but a thick and juicy market presence.
