Yes. The established small arms industries have stagnised into developing variants of the same weapon, whilst the newcomers learn from the existing and development models where older generation of small arms have disadvantages in. So, in theory, yes. I would say it is so - especially if an army is equipping it on mass.

M249 is a 1970 era design BELGIUM machine gun, designed and made by Fabrique Nationale - Herstal

The fact that the OP article didn't even know about this and claim this was a US "Light" Machine Gun see how much he knows the M249, making said "Comparison" worthless..........
