What's new

Luxembourg "increases" its presence in Mali.... sends a second soldier !

UK army needs to stay at home incase the less savory parts of London and northern post industrial cities decide to riot. Bobbies don't carry guns afterall...

j/k

I was about to wrote " do not be silly" , then saw the JK at the bottom.:cheesy:

By the way, that solider from Luxembourg is a T-800 Model. There shouldn't be a problem. just drop the fellow in an ISIS base and let him do his job.

Why should i pay even more taxes ? I am already heavily taxed,no need for more.
Spend budgets of immigration and so called 'integration' to defence. Prolem solved.
Or stop spending money for third world corrupt countries ? Problem solved.
You missen the 'or spend less on non-defence' i.e. take moeny away from existing government programs.

... is a great (and rich) country.

In 2011, according to the IMF, Luxembourg was the second richest country in the world, with a per capita GDP on a purchasing-power parity (PPP) basis of $80,119. Luxembourg is ranked 13th in the Heritage Foundation's Index of Economic Freedom, 26th in the United Nations Human Development Index, and 4th in the Economist Intelligence Unit's quality of life index. If it weren't for my love for the sea, I'ld move there in a heartbeat.

It is smart for a country with a population of just half a million to not sink a lot of money into defence: it would be quite pointless.

I agree 100%

Agreed my friend, especially the one in red which ends with :
"France, which has consistently taken the most hawkish line on the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, was not diluting its position, the diplomats said, while tiny Luxembourg, currently chairing the EU, takes the toughest line of all, arguing that Assad should be deposed by military means."

Is the lone guy a clone of Bruce Willis to warrant such an attitude? o_O :sniper:

You should place it last of that short list and thus have the thread eat its own head like that famed serpent.

Great catch, Tay.
:omghaha::omghaha:

The words "war","military" seem to be taboo for most of European leaders.

You guys have a budget that is bigger than ours, yet you aren't engaged in multiple overseas operations,it won't kill you to send hundreds of soldiers in Africa... ?

Well our forces are still engage even in Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Syria. Though its a far cry from this past decade when we had tens of thousands of soldiers involved in fighting in the region and other conflict zones, even though we are not officially at war anymore, but our forces are still engaged in active combat in these hotspots.

Anyway, at least we provided intelligence, logistical and military help to France in its operation s in Mali. Plus we also deployed over 300 special forces/soldiers in the country to provide training and coordinate operations against Islamist groups in the country.

Plus, you should note that our public and even some politicians are very against Great Britain getting involve in anymore wars overseas. As the Syrian crisis showed, Britain is becoming more and more wary of getting involve in foreign wars. Reason even our help to France in Mali was limited to providing as much support as we can without explicitly getting involve in fighting directly on the front lines. since this will have caused a lot of problems/headache to our leaders, as many MPs/opposition would have began questioning/accusing the government of getting involved in yet another war without Parliamentary/public approval/consent and bla bla bla.

The hell even the U.S didn't get actively involve in fighting in Mali because of similar reasons. They simply provided the same intelligence, logistics, training, military support like we did. The reason for the U.S/U.K taking a less aggressive role unlike France these past years as i said before is because of the U.S/U.K led Iraq and Afghanistan wars which was very unpopular, so they are both very careful in getting involved in any foreign wars/conflicts today unlike France who doesn't have such a baggage hanging on its head/conscience.:D

Yes we need another soldier trained in Mali at the highest level so as to save our home - Luxembourg. This world has become too insecure and we needed to boost our defence by doubling it in size....now we have TWO complete soldiers....not right......but soon he will finish the training.

There are still many lads projected but by now, it's the BoG to dwell ratio that really hurts.
America suffers from the same and France will get there in a few short years. Reality s..ks!

Good night Mikey and all, Tay.

Ok,let me resume :

After the cowards attakcs in Paris,France invoked EU's article 42.7,which means all EU members have to help MILITARLY a member after that it has been attacked.

@flamer84 @Atanz @mike2000 is back @Abingdonboy @waz @bobo6661

So far ;

UK : Sent a destroyer that joined the French battlegroup.
Belgium : Sent a frigate (50% of their fleet....) that joined our battlegroup.
Luxembourg : Sends a second soldier to Mali, just for training......
Germany : Sends some Tornado for reconnaissance missions,a tanker and 1.200 troops..... + ~680 troops in Mali to replace the Dutch soldiers... (Peacekeeping mission....)

Wooa.

Why didn't we invoke NATO's article 5 instead,at least the US would have provided the help needed. :agree:

Luxembourg is to send a second soldier to Mali to help in the fight against the Islamic State, in response to an appeal for solidarity from France.

According to AFP, the Grand Duchy will send an additional soldier to working on the EU training mission in Mali in early 2016.

The individual will advise the Malian armed forces. Luxembourg also offers strategic transport capabilities managed by NATO as well as contributing financially to the Malian army's fight against extremism.

The country has also pledged 2 million euros to the Malian military to help in the fight against extremism. These funds will be used for training and equipment, medical materials and to support projects that work to prevent the radicalisation of children and their recruitment as soldiers.

Following the deadly attacks in Paris on November 13, France called took advantage of a clause in the Lisbon treaty, which says the victim of an attack can call for assistance from other countries.

Well it is a 100% increase in manpower :rofl::rofl:

Seriously though, this is a complete joke.

. .
After thinking,we might laugh at them, but the majority did nothing...
The problem is that Europe is far too insular these days and focusing on issues at home and any "action" they take to show "solidarity" with France is merely for external consumption and on a superfical level with no substance behind it.

.
Purely political about the 42.7. It was a case of using the crisis to further Euro Defense.
It seems to be a failure for now ...
except if it leads to other nations accepting leadership from the 2 that have the means?

:azn:  Tay.

If any European country EVER dares to ask for French army's support,i hope we only send 2 cooks...... just to see their reactions....

Europe is all talk and no actions... Sadly.

Brits should stop thinking we live in a world full of Bisounours,if you don't fight these scums overseas, they'll come and kill you in your home.. :disagree:

Lool yes I agree we should shed our Iraq war guilt and carry on protecting our interests and allies globally by all means necessary. ONLY SOME NAIVE BRITISH CITIZENS THINK THAT ISOLATING OURSELVES AND ALLOWING OTHERS TO PROTECT OUR INTERESTS IS A GOOD STRATEGY. They live in a dream world .

As for Luxembourg, to be honest I don't understand why you are mad at them. They are a small country or city state if you like. Couple hundreds thousands inhabitants. They barely have(and don't need) an army. So there is no point being mad at them for sending 2 soldiers, since they barely have any. They live in a totally peaceful /prosperous region and are surrounded by friendly countries all part of one E.U. They don't need a large army/ military at all.

Is he picking up our slack? Our boys (and girls) came home earlier this year. I'm not sure if the mission was downsized or another nation opted to rotate their men through.

Special units don't get fanfare then they return home, so no reliable information on their presence in Mali.
