Lt Gen (r) Jamshed Gulzar Kiyani passes away

RAWALPINDI: Former Rawalpindi Corps commander and former Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) chairman Lieutenant General (r) Jamshed Gulzar Kiyani passed away on Saturday at the age of 64. Kiyani will be laid to rest in the Army Graveyard Rawalpindi today (Sunday) after Zohar prayers. He is survived by his widow and three daughters. The former general was under treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) for a month. Lt Gen (r) Kiyani joined the Pakistan Army in 1965 and retired on October 14, 2004. Remembered as an upright and honest officer during his military career, Lt Gen (r) Kiyani was appointed Rawalpindi Corps commander shortly after the October 12, 1999 military coup of General (r) Pervez Musharraf. In 2001, he was made the General Headquarters (GHQ) adjutant general. Soon after his retirement, he was appointed as the FPSC chairman. Kiyani also served as the FPSC chairman for three years. Since he never compromised on principles, Lt Gen (r) Kiyani developed some differences with Musharraf during his FPSC tenure. As a result, the former president promulgated an ordinance to get rid of the honest general, cutting the tenure of FPSC chairman from five years to three years. During his stint as the FPSC chairman, Kiyani published two annual reports, criticising the Shaukat Aziz government for bypassing the FPSC rules and regulations to appoint their own men on key posts. The former general joined the Pakistan Ex-servicemen Association and became a staunch critic of former president Pervez Musharraf. He criticized the Kargil War and the imposition of emergency on November 3, 2007. Kiyani also raised his voice for the reinstatement of sacked chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary. An emergency meeting of the Pakistan Ex-servicemen Association was held on Saturday to condole the death of Kiyani. The association expressed grief over the untimely death of one of their colleagues. Lt Gen (r) Hameed Gul, Gen (r) Naeem Akbar, Gen (r) Saleem Haider, Gen (r) Salahuddin, Gen (r) Zuberi, Brig (r) Mahmud, Brig (r) Taj, Brig (r) Abdus Salam, Brig (r) Khadim, Brig (r) Mumtaz and Brig (r) Rauf among others expressed condolence over the death of Kiyani.

They said that Kiyani was a soldier of exceptional caliber and that he performed meritorious services for the Army during his long career. aamir yasin

Annyone know what the cause of the Death ?

I did not know Lt Gen Jamshed Gulzar personally but recently when he was in news, a mutual friend reminded me that he was a couple of years junior to us at the St Mary’s Cambridge School, Murree Road, Rawalpindi.

Apparently Gen sahib had heart problems and took early retirement following a “Bypass”. Cause of death is probably related to the same trouble.

people... as muslims, we must respect the dead and never speak or say anything bad about them. more importantly, this man was muslim so he deserves a janaza prayer. if you weren't able to do that, the least you could do is make du'a for him since janaza prayer is a du'a itself.

My father was in Military Dairy Farms. He got transferred every 2/3 years. I have therefore attended many schools all over Punjab. At St Mary's I spent two years. I left after 4th standard in 1956 and took Matric Exam from Islamia High school located just after the Leh bridge on the same road.

It has been more than 50 years. Only teacher I remember fondly is Qazi, because my Urdu was bad and it he who instilled love of urdu in me. However, I will never forget tasty cream rolls from Student bakery on the college road. During my time that was the favorite place of students from St Marys and St Pat's. Which year were you there?

well sir, i am junior to you. my father was in the army but in the last few years he was stationed in GHQ as PSO-1.
i was enrolled in St'Marys murree road in 64 until i finished by Senior Cambridge exams in 69. the teachers i remember were father naylor, a jovial fellow and major tims, a maths and english teacher. he was a tough son of a b****!
small world anyway!

Although, I shouldnt say this at this time. He lied on national tv regarding some important issues and spoke against the norms of protecting national interests. Even his former colleagues came out against him.

Anyways, it's sad.
