The arrest of Gonen Segev, who has been accused of working as a spy for Tehran, sparked a storm among Iranian social media users on Monday, with many arguing that Israel had gone crazy with its anti-Iran hysteria.

Gonen Segev, the former Israeli minister of energy and infrastructure, has been accused of providing Iran, Israel's major enemy, with sensitive data about security facilities and the country's energy industry.

The investigation revealed that starting 2012, Segev had been in contact with Iran's intelligence via the Iranian embassy in Nigeria. The meetings with Iranian agents were held in hotels and apartments around the world, which were "used for secret Iranian activity," the police added.

The arrest has prompted vivid reactions among social media users.

Many Iranians published posts on Twitter in which they expressed support and sympathy for the former Israeli energy minister under the hashtag #FreeGonenSegev and demanded his release.

Some Twitter users appeared to be very much concerned with Segev's fate.

Others slammed Israel for persecuting political opponents and cracking down on freedom of expression.

Segev was a member of the Knesset (parliament) from 1992 to 1996, combining his parliamentary activity with the post of minister of energy and infrastructure.

Propaganda....the current Israeli establishment is using all necessary tools in its disposal to squash opposition and create diversion during these corruption investigations. Now they use the Iran card again.

What would Iran want with an energy minister? Wouldn’t they pick someone who has more knowledge of the military arm of government?

Well this goat herder is accused of passing out info on Israeli power plants to Iranian agents in Nigeria.

Literally read what you're writing ffs, do you have any idea the value of someone who was in CHARGE of Israel's entire energy grid (and infrastructure)?

Iran needs to recruit a lot of these Pali's and Lebanese who not only look very similar to these joos but are also fluent in hebrew and recruit them in the Iranian etellat and plant them in that country.

How about you go read what the allegations are. It clearly states since he hasn’t been in office for more than 20 years and that he had no value to Iranian intelligence based on what he knew then.

The energy minister wasn’t in “charge” of the energy grid. Minister positions are overrated glorified gigs.

If you did actually read the articles they are saying after he left Israel he set up a “medical” company of some sort in Nigeria. He “supposedly” had a lot of “connections” to important people across Israel and the world and that Iran exploited his connections to these people to get intel on what those important people he knew.

The West had a spy on Iran’s nuclear negotiating team, now that IS valuable and concerning. A former Israeli energy minister from 25 years ago that ran a medical company? If that is the best of Iran’s intelligence efforts than Iran is in trouble.

It’s not that easy, Mossad is much older than Iran’s intelligence agency in intel gathering. They have managed to infilitrate SAA, Hezbollah, IRGC at different times in history.

The IRI purged SEVAK after the revolution. So while Iran’s current intelligence apparatus is robust it’s young. We will never know how capable they are in spy vs spy operations.

I don't think it's propaganda specially when it comes to high government officials

Israelis can't show themselves as weak infront of their people and the world

It’s propaganda and that is exactly why Israel is showing him.

If this guy was a true threat to Israel national security he would be kidnapped by Mossad long ago and all information he gave would extracted and he would then be eliminated.

The fact this was let through the massive military censorship that Israel has over the news points to propaganda.

Or else why would Israel announce to the world the failure of its intelligence force to the entire world and finding about this guy so late?

I mean guys Iran has former ministers/government officials living ALL across the world including in western countries. By that logic Iran must be bad bakht by now.
