Looking to deepen relationship with India: Pentagon

Identifying India as a major player in the region, the Pentagon has said that the United States is looking to deepen its relationship with New Delhi as the Defense Secretary Leon Panetta embarks on his fourth trip to the Asia Pacific region. "With respect to India, he (Panetta) believes
that India is a very important player. As you know, he recently visited the country and had very productive discussions in Delhi with his Indian counterparts," the Pentagon Press Secretary George Little told reporters at a news conference here yesterday.

"India plays a very important role, and we're looking to deepen our relationship with the government of India, including the Deputy Secretary of Defence (Ashton) Carter's efforts to look at streamlining sales between the two countries.

So India, the bottom line, is a key player in the region, and we look forward to continuing to build an even stronger defence relationship," Little said.

During his trip to India early this year, Panetta had entrusted Carter with the task of working with Indians to reduce bureaucratic hurdles in defence trade between India and the US.

"He (Carter) has been very active and engaged on this issue. I'm not aware of a specific report per se, but let me assure you that he is working on this matter very hard," the Pentagon spokesperson said.

Obama will do his best to improve relation with India. That's why I always wanted him to get re=elected. :D

.
I would love to see F35 deal with in a decade . It would be the worlds best aircraft for SEAD+EW and other offensive strike operations .

I don't know. He's been a bit inconsistent I feel wrt India. Yes DR MMS was the first head of state to have an official visit with the Obamas, yes India was one of the first international visits he made but he's not done a huge amount to move forward in a truely meaningful way. And I don't know if Romney wouldn't have done more- he and the Republicans are laughably scared of China so may have sought even closer ties with India applying the "enemy of my enemy is my freidn" logic-even though INdia and China aren't really enemies (this is just a desire of the West). And many of the fruits of closer India-US ties we are seeing right now were implemented by Bush not Obama.

For the IN the F-35 would be ideal (or close to it) if the price is right. Make a package deal with the USG for EMALS and EV-22 AEWs to deck out an IN ACC this could be VERY attractive to IN leadership. But for the IAF the F-35 is a non-starter.

Agreed...but Obama did carry it forward. I wouldn't have put my bet on Romney + there would have been some gap as their would be change in policies.

One of the fact is Obama's view regarding Russia. He is more forth-coming towards it and that is good for us too. Romney viewed Russia as enemy, Obama want to improve the relation. This might avoid tough choice for us to take side.

True, also wrt Russia he signed a nuke disarmenant policy with Russia to reduce the number of nuke warheads on both sides by 1000s, so good the the world as a whole! Yeah with the move to the right of the Republican party I don't think it was a safe bet that their hatred for China would outbalance their dislike for India-being a brown nation that steals all their jobs, which I have heard some extreme right wing Republicans claim.

Anyway it is what it is, hopefully Obama takes the Indo-US relationship to greater heights.

+I really get the sense that on a personal level Obama really likes India and especially DR MMS, so that is good for India.

Obama's policies will hurt India economywise while Romney was not against outsourcing.

As a businessman he wasn't but as President I'm pretty sure he would've been. And I doubt Obama's policies will hurt India too badly wrt economy.

He intends to deny the deduction of offsource expenses especially payroll which will make the offsource operations expensive thereby many jobs will be brought back to US. That is where the Indian IT companies will lose out though US can't sustain such mode of operation due to the aging US workforce unless Obama reforms the immigration policies offering GC immediately for deserving foreign workers.

Will this be passed? This would cause operational costs for many US companies to sky-rocket.

Not sure with the Republicans dominating the U.S house of representatives but at the end of day, it will be give and take - Repulicans will let go of certain issues while Obama will compromise on certain other issues. If this policy is allowed by Republicans as a compromise, then Indian outsourcing companies are going to be impacted but I am not sure how much.

Also Obama is under pressure to reform the immigration policies after the impact of the latino votes in the 2012 elections. Maybe he might not care especially this being his second regime.

If it does happen it is not going to have a catastophic impact on the Indian outsourcing compaines as IIRC these days the somthing like 60% of the outsourcing market for India comes from Europe.

And the immigration issue again is not a huge issue because the majority of immigrants that come from India to the US are stundants or skilled labour and I doubt the US is going to want to turn these guys away.

On the first point, I do not have a view on the nos.

One the second point, what I mean to state is that Obama needs to reform the immigration policies to offer some kind of GC to deserving candidates like what you quoted - skilled labor and students from India to reinforce the aging U.S workforce.

In the long term, he plans to invest in research and also in schools as he always felt that U.S kids lack in proficiency in maths and science when compared to Asian kids.

Hey man, he is the leader of the US he can do what he wants to his nation. All I'm saying is that India and the US are not so intertwinned nor is India so dependant on the US that any of these measures will have a hugly negative affect on India's long term growth.

This is my nation as well. So is my interest in various policies of his. But you have put in perspective - US and India are not cojoined twins that it is going to affect each other.
